Signee Spotlight: Shea Tatara

DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Pam Bustin is excited to announce the third member of the 2020 recruiting class, Shea Tatara, who will begin her career as a Blue Devil next fall.

A defender from Hershey, Penn., Tatara is a four-year starter and letterwinner at Hershey High School under coach Bri Price. During her freshman season in 2016, she was a defensive back and was a Lebanon League All-Star selection. Tatara helped guide her team to Mid-Penn League Champions and Pennsylvania State Semifinalists in 2017 while being named to the Mid-Penn League First Team and PHSFHCA Second Team All-State.

As a junior, she was recognized in Max FH's Top 50 Class of 2020 after her team was named the PIAA High School Field Hockey AAA State Champions. She was a First Team All-Star, PHSFHCA First Team selection, Second Team All-Region and named to the NFHCA's 2018 High School Academic Squad. Selected as a captain her senior season, Tatara's squad made it to the PIAA AAA State Semifinals as she earned spots on the PHSFHCA First Team All-State, All-State Academic Squad and First Team All-Star.

On the club scene, she played for Xcalibur from 2016-2018 and has been with the WC Eagles since 2018 where she won the Hollan Cup in 2019. At the national level, Tatara has been a part of USA Field Hockey's Futures Program since 2016, playing in the National Futures Championship the past three years, while also being a Junior Olympic selection. Her team finished first at the Junior Olympics in 2016 and she also earned a first-place finish at the National Futures Championship in 2017.

Off the field, Tatara is a member of the National Honor Society and Psychology National Honor Society. She dedicates some of her free time volunteering at the Country Meadows Nursing Home.

Born Shealyn Renee Tatara on July 12, 2002, she is the daughter of Brian and Collen Tatara and has one older sibling, Carter (19).

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
"When my high school team won the state championship and celebrating on the field with my team."
How did you start playing field hockey?
"I played soccer and my mom made me go to a field hockey clinic in seventh grade. I didn't want to go at all but ended up quitting soccer that night."
Who has made the biggest impact on your life?
"My mom. She is the reason I started playing field hockey and she has helped me become the strong-willed person I am today."
Why Duke?
"I chose Duke, because I can play field hockey at the highest level and participate in one of the best medical programs in the country."
Best advice you've ever been given?
"Don't follow others – be your own person and be a leader."
