NATO countries are beginning large-scale North Coast exercises off the coast of Estonia and Latvia. According to the German Ministry of Defense, one of the scenarios being practiced during these maneuvers is an enemy blockade of a merchant ship, which results in an attack on NATO ships and subsequent escalation.

It is planned to practice the actions of allies in a situation where one of the NATO countries is attacked, in response to which NATO units are deployed off the coast of the Baltic Sea using ships, aircraft and landing units.

The maneuvers will last two weeks. Some 30 ships and more than 3,000 troops from all NATO countries in the Baltic Sea region and naval units from the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France, as well as non-NATO Sweden, are participating.
