Official: AC Milan vs. Sassuolo starting XIs – one change from Salernitana draw

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has made just one change to his starting line-up from the team that drew with Salernitana for tonight’s game against Sassuolo.

There are several absences for Pioli to deal with again as Marco Sportiello, Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw, Fikayo Tomori, Marco Pellegrino, Mattia Caldara, Yunus Musah, Tommaso Pobega and Noah Okafor will all miss the game.

With the crisis at centre-back, Pioli has once again named Theo Hernandez in the middle alongside Simon Kjaer. Alessandro Florenzi takes his spot at left-back, with Davide Calabria the right-back.

In midfield Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijjani Reijnders are down as the two box-to-box players, with Ismael Bennacer expected to anchor the three in the middle.

Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao are the right and left wingers respectively either side of the centre-forward Olivier Giroud, which is now the first choice attacking trio.

Official Milan XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Kjaer, Theo, Florenzi; Loftus-Cheek, Bennacer, Reijnders; Pulisic, Giroud, Leao.

Bench: Mirante, Nava, Bartesaghi, Jimenez, Nsiala, Simic, Krunic, Adli, Zeroli, Chaka Traore, Romero, Chukwueze, Jovic

Official Sassuolo XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli, Toljan, Ferrari, Erlic, Pedersen; Matheus Henrique, Thorstved; Berardi, Bajrami, Laurentie; Pinamonti.

Bench: Pegolo, Cragno, Missori, Mulattieri, Ceide, Alvarez, Castillejo, Viti, Volpato, Lipani, Tressoldi.

  1. We must win this game. Udinese just owned Bologna ass. Which one is better between underrated Lorenzo Lucca or overrated Zirkzee 😀

  2. Very confident of the line up tonight..
Rafeo leao / pulisic / Olivier Giroud..
What a combination up front …
Midfield do you bit tonight ,,,plenty of crosses into the box ,,but put them in early ,,that is so that their defenders are facing the wrong way ..That’s gives Olivier Giroud the ammo ..
He will score tonight ..We will win the game ,
Yes fully confident I am .

  3. Sadly this is the game that would have to get Mr. Pioli sacked. We all agree that we are hit with injuries and have crisis especially at Central Defense but unfortunately Mr. Pioli has decided to put Theo (an offensive weapon) at CB with Florenzi and Simic at LB and on the bench respectively. Now we are incapacitated at the back and upfront. Mr. Pioli has no trick in the bag again and will only blame injuries after losing this game.
If losing this game would bring in a coach who can help us make the leap, then with a heart of tears so be it.

  4. Funny I saw the probable Starting Lineups yesterday and Pioli’s was as predictable as ABC but Sassuolo’s had few changes. Very one-dimensional coach y’all got here. But I’m tired of complaining about same coach that was playing Krunic as a LW or one that was benching Leao for Rebic until Rebic got injured. Or the long ball specialist coach. He has nothing else to offer. But y’all keep supporting this mediocrity. We could win Sassuolo but that doesn’t change the fact this guy is trash.

  5. its sad that many of our fan are beginning to adapt to the mid-table team mentality of forget yesterday loss and hope for miracle today!… this same coach with his predictable and one dimensional play is yet expected to perform a miracle!….so SAD many here are still saying we will win this match! oh what a line up…..isnt this same lineup that has been whipped and outplayed and outsmarted many many times!….when the coach has no gameplan….just zombie along

  6. Our buildup play have to be the slowest in the whole damn world. Even the commentators mentioned this. We just have our defenders and GK walking around with the ball and waiting to kick the long ball. It’s freaking crazy.

  7. Fair half. With the way some fans here have painted Milan and the lineup, you’d think Florenzi and Theo would’ve been murdered by now.

I like our structure so far. With the way Benny and RLC are pushed forward, reminds me of Man City with De Bryune and Bernardo; but we move the ball much slower and the technique in tight spaces from the half-10s (Benny and RLC) is not as good. But we had similar ultraattacking look while risking less. (The match actually reminds me of Man City’s Match earlier where they spent like 90% of the match just moving the ball around and just looking for the space. But ofcourse they move much faster in those spaces that matter, and Sheffield doesn’t carry as much threat on the counter as Sassuolo).

Bottom line; keep probing, contain them better, faster decisions in the tight spaces.

    1. It’s a simple decision. Benny is still getting back to full fitness. Krunic, the logical replacement is on his way out; plus he hasn’t fully recovered mentally and terms of fitness since the injury (I liked him this season before the injury).
      Enter, Adli.

      1. P.S: Zeroli’s entry is also logical.

It’s easy to explain Pioli’s choices if you’re not already prejudiced that he is monster that hates players because of their haircut.
