EZOS, COURTYARDS
Transitional spaces in new old Tbilisi
The old city of Tbilisi is an ancient crossroad between Europe and Asia.
Following turbolent centuries of warfare, invasions, revolutions and economic depression, the city is now facing modernity, rehabilitating its architectural heritage and promoting mass tourism.
In 2013, Agmashenebeli Avenue - a narrow and congested street - was turned into a pedestrian area for luxury commerce. These kind of interventions may lead to a radical change and jeopardize daily life of traditional neighborhoods.
Tbilisi's traditional courtyards are the places where past, present and future collide.
In 2017, the think-tank Stadslab - European Urban Design Laboratory - has been invited to Tbilisi to analyze the impact of recent urban interventions on courtyards' fragile environment.
