The bar is the spirit of the house; no pun intended. Unless you enjoy a daily nightcap, the home bar takes centre stage especially during the last quarter of the year in India, as we enter the festive season. As bizarre as this may sound, even Ayurveda permits the occasional tipple—the Charaka Samhita notes that there are certain instances in which it is okay to consume a bit of alcohol—depending on our internal emotional and physical states, age, digestion, season, and even the time of day.
Namrataa Kripallani, a MahaVastu practitioner, who runs a Vastu consultancy called New Age Magic in Pune, feels that understanding Vastu placements to set up your home bar will also determine whether you enjoy your alcohol responsibly, or feel dependent on it. In a post-pandemic scenario, cliques feel safer enjoying their cocktails in someone’s living room, rather than at a crowded pub. Depending on the ambience you’re seeking to create, she tells you where to place a bar cabinet as per Vastu for home.
For Family Gatherings
“A bar placed in the east-of-south-east (ESE) helps in creating cordial relationships at home,” Kripallani says. It also helps in reducing anxiety in the residents. The bar here also assists the residents have a clear mind, and analyze their thoughts. If placed in this direction, ensure your bar unit has no mirrors, and choose cabinets that are made out of wood or stainless steel.
To Manifest Desires
In Vastu for home, the west is associated with the Pushpdant portal, which is associated with manifesting one’s dreams. “A bar placed in the west increases the gains and profits of a family,” the Vastukar says. It also enhances the energies of the west, to help residents find clarity in their dreams and manifest their life’s desires.
A Therapeutic Tipple
The west-of-north-west is an ideal zone to place a bar when you’re seeking an emotional outlet. This direction helps the residents to emotionally detox and release any blocked feelings which are holding them back. It helps settle the mind and get rid of emotional fatigue.
Networking Events
“If you’re networking with professionals, the north west is a good direction to place a bar,” Kripallani says. This placement helps get the desired results from work meetings, if you host drinking parties at home. It also facilitates residents in getting support from their friend circle when required. Choose a bar made from brass or wrought iron, with limited use of mirrors incorporated into its design, here.
Alcohol As An Aphrodisiac
“Whether you’re single, in the honeymoon phase, or looking to spice up your marriage, set up your bar in the north-of-north-west (NNW), to turn your apartment into a cosy love nest,” Kripallani says. This direction is considered a love corner, a bar here can enhance intimacy between a couple, and help someone who is single attract lovers.
Choose a bar cabinet that is made from wood but should be painted white, black or in shades of blue. Silver metal or mirror can be used to enhance the design of the bar here.
Relocate Your Bar If
Vastu Vidya doesn’t recommend any other direction for bar placements. The south east is a big no as it can lead to loss of money. A bar in the south can cause sleeping disorders or even insomnia. A bar placed in the west-of-south-west (WSW) of the house may adversely affect concentration and focus of the residents, inhibiting a child’s academic brilliance. If a bar made in the south west, residents may feel unable to utilise their skills to its fullest. It may also effect relationships adversely.
