Boom Discoveries: Meet Nasha Travis, the African Sound Queen
By: Noah Okello
On the latest edition of Boom Discoveries, we feature the talented Nasha Travis who at just 19 years, is already getting her own share of the cake in the highly competitive Kenyan music industry.
Give us a little intro about yourself.
I'm Nasha Travis, an afro Rnb artiste. l started my music last year, 2020 and l have 5 songs so far.
Tell us how you got into music. Where does your journey start?
My journey in the music industry started last year with a cover to a song called Holy - by Justin Bieber, then finally l started writing my own songs, where by l did 'Pambana' as my first ever single.
Which Kenyan artistes did you grow up listening to and looked up to?
The Kenyan artistes that I grew up listening to were Wahu, Nameless and Avril. l still look up to Wahu with the likes of Nadia Mukami, Jovial and Tanasha Donna.
Talk to us about your music. How many songs do you have and how was it for you working on them?
My music journey has been an amazing experience, it has taught me a lot, of course there have been the highs and lows but l keep on pushing together with my team that consists of my mom (Jane muthoni Ngige), manager (Mandela Nelson oroni) and my videographer (mrima pictures).
Here is a breakdown of my five songs
(a) Pambana- The song encourages people to not give up no matter what they are going through in their day to day lives.
(b) Mazoea- Talks about empowering women to be independent and not let men take advantage of them.
(c) Memories - Talks about remembering the people who were close to us but are now nowhere to be seen.
(d) Nadata - It's a love song and l featured Reagan Dandy on it.
(e) Akitokea - It talks about finding the ideal guy with the right personalities and finally taking him to my parents for approval.
It was definitely life changing working on my songs because l keep getting better with every new release.
How did you land a collaboration with Mejja and what lessons did you learn from him?
This was my first ever collaboration and we did a song called 'Naitwa Mejja'. The collab was made possible by my management who reached out to him and he responded positively, we travelled to Nairobi and worked on the song.
The lesson that l learnt from him is that one should always be humble and be kind to others no matter what. Do not judge others and always do your thing unapologetically.
Which are some of the challenges that you have faced since you made your debut in the music industry?
The challenges I have faced are financial, sometimes it's a bit tricky to record and shoot a great video and with the pandemic, things have even been more tough.
Another is discrimination on gender basis. Most Women are paid low performance fees compared to the men.
Describe yourself in three words
Creative, flexible and adventurous.
What do you enjoy doing during your free time?
l just do my vocal practices, l love doing tiktok challenges, l go live on my social media platforms, l do fun activities like watching and a lot more.
Which is your dream vacation destination?
My dream vacation destination has to be Dubai, on a yacht 😂and Paris too.
Favourite meal?
Pilau, chicken, Biriani and Pizza 😍
Describe your sense of fashion
My style must be comfortable, fitting and generally just fashionable.
What's next for Nasha Travis? Any plans for new music or a major project like am album?
I'm definitely aiming to release better music and share good vibes with my fans and other more amazing projects. I am also aiming to be amongst the best vocalists in the world.
About an album, I am still focusing on the singles after that we can think of one.
Final words to your fans

Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are we who come in the name of the Lord. Truly blessed are we that have a strong faith that can endure the challenges that life brings to us. I pray all of this to Jesus Christ, my strength and my redeemer. Amen.
