Bribes, Booze, and Buckethead Bliss

While we are mostly a selfless group here at @cbb_dfs, on rare occasions we can be a bit self-serving. Today’s content is a good example of that. Hang with me here Bucketheads…

As a father of three, I use bribes every day. If I need my 6-year-old son to do something, I bribe him with chocolate. If I need my 10-year-old daughter to do something, I bribe her with ice cream. If I need my 12-year-old daughter to do something, well, I’m shit out of luck. If anyone has any advice on handling a pre-teen, I’m all ears. Ok, I digress.

So where are we going with this intro, Byrd? Well, it’s been a long ass week. I’m about to start another massive project at work. 8th grade basketball regionals just ended for my oldest, but volleyball tryouts have already begun. My middle child broke her finger on the trampoline, so she’s mad she can’t do round-off back handsprings across the living room right now. And my youngest is all boy, so he’s a non-stop bundle of energy. Life is chaotic right now. Literally, just non-stop chaos from 6:45 am until the kids go to bed. What I need tonight is several ice-cold Miller Lite drafts, the sound on the Illini v. Maryland game at the bar, and most importantly, someone to drink with so I’m not the creepy old guy at the bar myself. And this is why we are writing up today’s slate.

See, if we write up content today, that gives me a better chance of getting Joe to come out and drink all the beers, watch the games, and sweat our lineups, bets, and PrizePicks together. Once Joe writes up a couple of the games, he’s going to want to see how his content plays out (spoiler alert, it’s going to be fireballs) and if we helped our Bucketheads win money (spoiler alert #2, you are going to win money tonight).

So, today’s content is a bribe. A bribe I selfishly hope works. But regardless of if my tactics are successful, it’s a win for our Bucketheads because we have full blown DFS and PrizePicks content today.  All for free!!  Because that’s our thing. Because regardless of what happens with the future of @cbb_dfs, we were able to build an unbelievable community of incredible followers. Because we love you guys. And if you made it through this long ass intro, you truly deserve to win tonight.  So, let’s dive in, build some high scoring lineups, and win all the damn money tonight Bucketheads!!

GUARDS WE LIKE

Tyree Appleby, WAKE (G, 8000) – Tyree shoved me in a locker for saying his $7600 price tag was a little rich earlier this week. My bad Tyree!! He has over 40 DK in half the games this season and although completely different players, we saw alpha roles from Alondes Williams last year. Coach Forbes is willing to let his best players take on massive usage and Appleby has been nothing short of phenomenal. Other than being a road game, nothing scary about the matchup and Clemson is giving up a bunch of looks from three this year.

Adam Flagler, BAY (G, 7700) – Flagler didn’t get a steal, which is generally his gimmick, earlier this week that would have gotten him over in PrizePicks. Fortunately for Adam, I don’t hold grudges. Sike!! I do!!  You let down Buckethead nation brotato chip. Step it up!!  From a DFS perspective, he’s offered an incredibly high floor all season long. Expect another 30+ DK tonight. Keyonte George (G, 7200) offers a slightly higher ceiling but much wider range of outcomes, but the Zags are generally swiss cheese on defense so I wouldn’t be shocked to see the electric freshman get loose tonight. LJ Cryer (G, 6500) is another one of those great mid-priced options to get exposure to this game. He’s probably going to score 20 real points, so it’s just a matter of if he gets involved in the ancillary production. You really can’t screw this game up too much.  Pick your favorites and move on.

Terrence Shannon Jr, IL (G, 7600) – Shannon is at max price on the season, but still under $8k which I consider a win. The Texas Tech transfer has a couple 50-bangers under his belt this season so clearly capable of going HAM on a given night. While Hawkins (F, 6500) deals with a triple-double hangover, I expect the Illini to lean on their best player in a hostile road environment. Double digit 3pt attempts wouldn’t be a surprise. If you’re the type of person that flexes their triceps in the mirror and winks more than twice during a conversation, you’re going to want Matthew Mayer (G/F, 5600) in your lineup. He’s still shot-hunting but instead of pouting like a baby, he’s rebounding and piling up D stats. Get him before he catches fire.

Jahmir Young, UMD (G, 7300) – He’s got a young man’s name and an old man’s game™. You might not be familiar with Young because you have a life and don’t spend hours a week watching game highlights and jerking off to KenPom™ (not literally…not always literally), but the Charlotte transfer was the best player in Conference USA the last two seasons. He looks like he could be one of the best players in the B1G already. Coming off back-to-back 5x, he will be big trouble for the freshman Illini back court. He leads the team in shot share (28%) and assist rate (24%) and shooting 86% from the line.

Tucker Richardson, COLG (G, 7000) – In 125 career games this young man has started 122. For a guy with two last names, he can flat out ball. The 5th year senior posted 55 DK in a win over Syracuse two weeks ago and leads the Raiders in usage and shot rate. With this evenly priced slate there are plenty of options in this range, but Richardson’s ancillary production keeps his floor high (4 rebs, 5.2 asts, 2.6 stls).

Wendell Green, AUB (G, 6600) – Wendell will be guarded by a true freshman tonight and that could get messy. Green leads the Tigers in minutes and usage and boast the 58th best assist rate in the nation. He’s also coming off a 22-point effort that was a season high. Out of the remaining Tiger guards, playing time becomes a concern as Bruce Pearl has been shuffling the rotation, leading to the 6th most bench minutes nationally. We’ve always liked K.D. Johnson (G, 5400) as a talent here at CBB_DFS so he’d be our pick if you were looking for an off-play from Auburn.

Cameron Hildreth, WAKE (G, 6300) – You guys know I’m writing him up, so if you had a Hildreth paragraph in your @cbb_dfs drinking game, take a drink. 100 fantasy points over his last 3 games as a complete stat-stuffer. I also love seeing 33 minutes from Damari Monsanto (G, 4700) last game, as he’s generally a high point per minute guy. It is a conference road game, so both are better suited for tourneys than cash games, but Wake is implied for 70 points tonight so they’ve got a chance. Now, let’s put a bow on this paragraph. (drink)

Jack Clark, NCST (G, 6200) – Nicknamed “Jack the Ripper”, the four-time all-star had his most productive years as a slugger playing first base for the St Louis Cardinals from 1985-1987. After his baseball career, a luxury car addiction and extravagant lifestyle would result in bankruptcy in the early 1990s, prompting him to enter sports broadcasting, later famously accusing Albert Pujols of taking PEDs… I have a gap in my notes but looks like the 6’8 Clark would then go onto to become La Salle’s best player as Junior, making all-conference second team before transferring to the Wolf Pack, where he’s made a quick impact as a double-digit scorer, solid rebounder and elite defensive player. Clark is just as likely to strike out as hit a homerun, therefore, we like him for tournaments only. You can pay up for one of the other guards but risk goes up substantially with price, so invest your money wisely, unlike Jack Clark.

Nike Sibande, PITT (G, 5600) – If your name is Nike, you have to be half-way decent right? Like Nike, he is arguably overpriced. Yet, 5x at this price in 3 of his last 4 games, so in spite of your better judgment, you have to consider buying. The good news is, this game is projected for a high score which should result in a loads of possessions. Nike’s best games have come with double-digit shot attempts. The clincher? NC State is an Adidas school… #checksoverstripes #checkmate

Rasir Bolton, GONZ (G, 5500) – Bolton and Nolan Hickman (G, 5500) offer nice price points to get access to a massive over/under. Baylor is giving up almost 40% from 3 this season, so Bolton profiles well, while Hickman has seen a significant increase in minutes and production of late. I don’t mind Julian Strawther (G, 7400) as a lower owned tourney option, as most people will lock in Timme and gravitate to value options to get exposure to this game.  I normally don’t get too wrapped up in ownership in CBB DFS vs. something like NFL DFS, but still a bit of strategery if you are looking to differentiate.

FORWARDS WE LIKE

Johni Broome, AUB (F, 8500) – I can’t think of the last time a price king was sub 9k, but that is the case tonight with Broome. Unfortunately, Johni is a GPP only target due to his lack of minutes. When on the floor Broome averages a jaw dropping 1.46 fantasy points per minute. He has the 4th highest block rate in the nation right now, is a top 100 rebounder, all while taking 30% of his teams shots when on the floor. Colgate is far from an elite defense, and are 304th nationally in avoiding blocked shots. This bodes well for Broome, but would need more minutes to feel more confident about a smash game.

Drew Timme, GONZ (F, 8200) – I guess DK is done pricing up every good player above $9k, so just like you can count on revenge in the Count of Monte Cristo, you can count on high ownership for Timme tonight. Cash game lock with tourney upside. Shave your beard, leave the horseshoe mustache, and do his stupid mustache taunt all night long. If you are looking to mega stack this game, Anton Watson (F, 6100) generally plays more minutes against better teams and Baylor is not imposing inside, so he’s a boom or bust GPP option and just hope for a quadruple overtime game.

Donta Scott, UMD (F, 7500) – This guy hates Illinois so much, you’d think he was from Wisconsin. Gave 25 to Illinois last time they played and looks leaner and more dynamic this year. He’s second in shot share at 27% but will also get after the boards and swat a couple shots. Julian Reese (F, 7100) could have some success against this switching Illinois defense as well. He’s an athletic big man that can kill you on the offensive boards and crush everything around the rim, shooting 78% from inside the arc.

John Hugley, PITT (F, 6400) – Here’s a classic misdirection, while everyone loads up on Blake Hinson (F, 8400) who has a fantastic matchup against a top 40 tempo Wolfpack team that is #205 in 3pt defense, you’re instead going to plug-in Hugley who just put up 1.5DK against the worst front court in the B1G, subsequently dropping his price $700. Now, here’s the catch, all the Bucketheads will read this and dogpile on Hugley, that’s where you come in through the backdoor and take the chalk in Hinson… Got it? Good talk.

Ryan Moffatt, COLG (F, 5800) – Moffatt has taken 13 more threes than twos this year and is making them at a 50% clip. He will be owned by no one, but will play 30 minutes. Moffat went for 30+ DK against Syracuse, Duquesne, and Monmouth in three straight games. Like Colgate the toothpaste, the senior forward is not very exciting. While not recommended, maybe you skip the toothpaste tonight. Other comps/necessary evils that are available include Aquafresh(man) PG Braeden Smith (6100) and center Keegan Records (5300) resembling boring and reliable Crest. Oliver Lynch-Daniel (G, 4600) is Sensodyne, will turn 25 before the season is over, so he gets the old person toothpaste.

PJ Hall, CLEM (F, 5500) – He only saw 24 minutes in double overtime last game, so that’s a concern as he works his way back from injury. However, he’s their best player and if he gets a full minute share, he’ll absolutely smash burger Wake’s defense. I hate the price points of the Hunters (Chase Hunter G, 6700 and Hunter Tyson F, 7800), but Wake is giving up more 3-point FG attempts than almost any team in the country and they are shooting 58% and 43% respectively from deep this season. I can’t imagine many people are going to press their button, so could be a contrarian option for a Clemson team projected to score in the mid-70s. The rest are high risk GPP options.

Matthew Marsh, WAKE (F, 3900) – There just isn’t a lot of value on this slate, which is probably ok since the price king is sub-$9k. March has seen 20+ minutes twice in the last 3 games, including a 19 DK point effort against Wisconsin. The 7’1 big man has been ultra efficient offensively and can rebound, so if you are in a pinch, you can head to the Marshlands down low for Wake and hope he sees 20+ minutes.

Johni Broome

OVER 28.9 Fantasy Score

Knowing how my week has gone, he’ll probably be a late game scratch, but assuming he plays – Johni be good!! As mentioned above, Broome is a fantasy point per minute machine when on the floor. Last game against Saint Louis he had 24 fantasy points in blocks alone! (PP scoring) The problem is minutes, but if Broome gets 20-25 tonight he should cruise past this number.

– Joe

Julian Strawther

OVER 25.2 Fantasy Score

Highest over/under of the night means max possessions and Strawther has gone over this total in 4 of his last 5, including multiple 40 burgers. LFG!!

– Byrd

BUCKETHEAD BONUS

Julian Reese

OVER 24.2 Fantasy Score

The Illini have had some trouble with athletic bigs this season (see Jesse Edwards). Reese is typically good for 3-4 defensive stats a game and has hit this in 4 of his last 5 games. He should be active on the offensive boards. If he can get a couple put-backs, the rest should come pretty easily.
