1. Bloody water runs down street of Leandra

Bloody water was flowing in the streets of Leandra small farmers area.

Residents suspect the sewage is mixed with blood that comes from a nearby butcher, and they said the situation and the stench are unbearable.

2. 9 suspected drug dealers arrested

Nine alleged drug dealers were arrested by the Secunda Hawks and the Crime Intelligence Unit.

The leader of a syndicate was arrested in Springs where the drugs are manufactured and the suppliers were arrested in a bar in Evander.

Cocaine, heroin, methcathinone (Cat) and vehicles were recovered during the operation.

3.  117 Zama-Zamas arrested

Residents applauded the local police for arresting 117 illegal miners.

They said the increase in illegal miners who were mostly dressed in the Basotho traditional attire, was becoming a serious concern and threat to them.

The illegal miners were arrested after police were tipped-off about a gang and after Mr Sanele Mokane (18), an illegal miner, was shot and killed on Friday, 11 July at the Winkelhaak Mine.

4. Council approves name changes

People complaining that the process of naming and renaming of geographical features in the Govan Mbeki municipal jurisdiction is a waste of ratepayers’ money, is not an issue worth commenting on, according to Mr Henry Masango, head of Marketing and Communications of the municipality.

5. Serial rapist jailed for life

Bheki Khumalo (35) from eMbalenhle was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape at the Secunda Regional Court.

He faced 28 charges of rape, 21 of kidnapping, six charges of robbery and a charge of attempted rape and murder.

Khumalo committed these crimes in eMbalenhle, Evander and Kinross between 2003 and 2010.

6. School pupils use classrooms as toilets

Kusasalethu Comprehensive School is in a bad state.

The school pupils apparently use the classrooms as a toilet as they feel it is more hygienic.

7. Decomposed fish netted at Trichardsfontein

People were horrified at the sight of dead fish that were netted in at the Trichardtsfontein Dam.

An estimated 500 karp barbels and other species died due to the illegal fishing nets that had been thrown into the dam.

The majority of the fish were in the advanced stages of decomposition.

8. Boy (8) drowns next to his house

Sihle Nkosi (8) drowned in a small dam next to his house.

Const Cynthia Mtsweni, communications officer for the eMzinoni Police Station, said several children were playing in a small dam next to Sihle’s house when the incident occurred.

9. Domestic worker possibly murdered

Police found the naked body of a woman in a garden flat in Umzinto Street, Extension 22 today, 6 November.

They were alerted when a fire erupted in the flat at about 11am.

Neighbours desperately tried to extinguish the fire with hose pipes, but the gates to the yard were locked.

10. Govan Mbeki Speaker slams land invaders

Mr Cyril Gwiji, Speaker of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said land invasion continues to pose a challenge in the area.

He said residents must be patient and refrain from invading unoccupied land.

People have occupied land illegally in Lebohang, Kinross and eMbalenhle in the past few months and there are pending court cases in some of these invasion cases.
