System Shock 2’s Shodan Reveal Recreated In CryEngine 3

by Mike Futter on Dec 15, 2014 at 08:20 AM

System Shock 2 is filled with twists and turns, the biggest of which is the revelation of its villain. Shodan is an evil, manipulative artificial intelligence who needs your help to stop her creations.

Today, System Shock 2 might not be quite as imposing thanks to outdated visuals. One person is trying to bring the graphics and the thrills into the 21st century.

A Polycount forum user that goes by the name “Mr. Smo” has recreated one of the most impactful scenes from Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios’ System Shock 2 using CryEngine 3.

Shodan’s appearance in Mr. Smo’s version of this scene is inspired by artist Jim Hatama (you can see the original on his DeviantArt page). We’ve included the original scene and Mr. Smo’s recreation below (with audio added by YouTube user DrunkenArsenal).

For more on this update to System Shock 2, head over to the original post on Polycount. There, you can see more comparison shots side-by-side.
