Point of correction Sir, the Binis didn’t found Lagos- Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, educates Oba of Benin (video)

Point of correction Sir, the Binis didn?t found Lagos- Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, educates Oba of Benin (video)

The Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oshodi, has disagreed with the Oba of Benin for claiming that the Binis founded Lagos state. The monarch who was in Lagos state to visit Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the weekend, said

‘’It is in the history books that the Binis founded Lagos. When some people will hear it now, they will go haywire, what is the Oba saying there again?  But it is true. Go and check the records. Maybe not all over Lagos as we know it now but certain areas in Lagos, maybe the nucleus of Lagos, was founded by my ancestors. The Oba of Lagos will say so''

Reacting to the monarch's comment, Oshodi in a video shared online said the monarch's comment is not true

‘’Point of correction Sir, Lagos was never founded by the Binis.  I am glad that you said some parts of Lagos, not the entire Lagos. You are right, your ancestors settled on a small Island that was called Eko then, before the creation of Lagos. On this very Island, they never created it. The Island had been then before the arrival of your ancestors. Your ancestors only came and forcefully imposed a taxation system on transit with the traders on the land called Idu Ighoran but there has been other tribes on the Island before the creation of Lagos. Even before the creation of Eko.''

Speaking further, he said

‘’Lagos is not founded and has never been founded by the Binis. The Bini ancestors are limited to Isale Eko and that is where they are. You want to visit? You are very free to do so but Sir, Lagos was not founded by the Binis. May you live long Sir''

Funny enough the oshodi guy said his ancestors were from Nupe, tinubus were from borno, some sorts western region werre merged to be part of Lagos , he even said some from Brazil , confusing all these points to a land occupied by diverse people and nearly all the yorubas fighting on behalf of Lagos claim are not even lagosians . Has Lagos been founded by yorubas made you a millionaire or given you more privileges like the Briton in his country .

So Benin kingdom that has a lineage of Oba's with Yoruba ancestry will scale over Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Ogun States to come and own Isale Eko (Lagos island. Even Oshodi family claim Taps (Nupe). Ancestry! Note that one of the famous Queen of ancient Benin republic also had Nupe ancestry! Learn from history!

The Aworis, Saros, Agudas we’re the first settlers in Lagos… bini migrated or we can say Jakpa from wherever they came from and settled in eko because of trade ties. They did not own Lagos and never will. Please stop saying what you don’t know. It’s like the Cameroonians saying they own and created France because they settled there decades ago… that is funny

They did not even conquer Lagos, they settled on some land and imposed taxes on indigenous people only because they were trade servy. Oba benin please stop lying sir. Tell the truth and stop encouraging hate and entitlement amongst tribes

They claim they own Lagos, is that why they bear Yoruba names where they come from in Edo state? but Yoruba's do not bear Edo names. This Oba that looks like Isreal DMV older brother should just keep dreaming.

You will be surprised they didn't meet people in some places, some older people will tell you many parts of lagos were deserted in the 80s, you can now imagine how it was 600yrs ago, meanwhile back in 2020 this guy was revealing so much dark side of Tinubu and lagos, is he now a king or some kind of leader? To me this is a senseless argument. Can any one argue that Britain created Nigeria even though the peoples were there already before their arrival. Who created a place goes beyond the question of who were the first occupiers. In the case of Lagos state, Yoruba were never the first occupiers.

Point of correction the Balogun of Lagos. Why are talking from both sides of your mouth. The Obama of Benin said the created Eko and you agreed with that. A people that imposed a tax system on a place shows that they are the ruler. The Binis did not say they created the island. The island is a creation of God. The Binis ruled the Island known as Eko which is today Known as Lagos. You need to read more of the great Bini Kingdom which extended to Dahomey.

Can everybody just stop bickering about this Lagos? Why can't we argue about other locations like this? All states should be developed and we should hold many governors accountable for their poor performance in their states over the years. Why is everyone's attention on Lagos? Abroad, cities are close to each other in development. In Nigeria, only a few cities take the cake. Na wa o.

Are you guys thinking of conquering each other again? Or is there a plan to impose another tax system from the conqueror on the conquered again in 2023? Many of the things we call history in Nigeria are less than 400 yrs old which if you go beyond that, are completely different from what we argue about today. If we had detailed documented history, you might be surprised to see Lagos was inhabited by Indians 800 yrs ago so unless you guys are thinking of expanding territories again, you all need to STFU!!!

I am not a Lagosian and I respect the Oba but I think he put the message wrongly. The Aworis and a few other tribes (but especially the Aworis) were the original settlers in what we now call Lagos. Bini may have had settlers in parts of Lagos and they may have even been dominating parts of Lagos at the time but it surely doesn't mean they founded Lagos. It is like the British saying they discovered Nigeria. Biko, how? The land had always been there. The people had always been there. The British just colonized Nigeria but they sure didn't conjure magic to create the land and the people. Some of the aworis, agudas and Saros (original owners of the land) who had been taken away as slaves to foreign lands, returned to Lagos after slave trade had been abolished in the western world and proceeded to develop it. Guys, simple google search and youtube search will educate you more on Lagos.

Oba is wrong, na the awori get Lagos , egun founded badagry while some Ijebu’s founded some parts too. This Oshodi too doesn’t know his story, his ancestor was a Nupe man who was a slaver. Though Nupe subgroup was considered a Yoruba cousin cos they have an oriki in Yoruba. Any tribe with an oriki in Yoruba language definitely is considered close to Yoruba…

You people have started again… people welcome and accommodate you for your very good business and trade ideas and success. You settle and then turn round and start calling them names and saying they will leave the land for you. I really feel sorry for some people because innocent people will be affected

As small as Lagos is, the portion under the Bini empire during their prime was only the current Lagos island which was a major fishing market then hence the taxation. Like the Balogun said, the current size of Lagos state has other thriving kingdoms like the Aworis, the Ijebus, Eguns, Egbas that were existing side by side with the Binis. So that narrative by the Oba of Bini is inaccurate as rightly pointed out by the Balogun.

Keep crying, even your word betrayed you, "your ancestors settled on a small Island that was called Eko then, before the creation of Lagos. On this very Island, they never created it. The Island had been then before the arrival of your ancestors." EKO is a bini word. EKO is not a Yoruba word. The island cannot be called EKO before the binis discovered it. The binis discovered it and called it EKO. THE OBA OF BINI IS WISE, HE VISITED LAGOS TO REMIND THEM WHO THEIR ORIGINAL BOSS WAS.

Which is first? Eko or Lagos? It was Eko that gave birth to Lagos. Please read history of West Africa by J.E. Adetoro. The Binis even used Eko as a trading post with the Portuguese. The Yorubas are also migrants to Lagos.

You are crazy, you will be a migrant in your own land. You see why some people don’t like these people in their properties? They turn around and bite the finger that fed them fat. If it was bini that owned Lagos, why are they not there predominantly? They came for trade, and left, leaving the indigenous Yorubas there

One Northerner also said yorubas are migrants in kwara, that they met indigenous people there. It was said in yoruba Station, I just begin 😅. It is same way oduduwa was said to meet indigenous people when he came from mecca were he was said to be banished from for idol worshipping and human sacrifice. It Is possible the ruling class of the yorubas are not the same with the people.

You see why history needs to be taught in school, do you know Italy (Rome) and Greece (Alexander the great) once ruled the world and founded many countries cities influenced civilization and culture? We now this because the history is documented. Today Italy and Greece are small countries less power and wealth but u can deny thier history. That is the problem with Nigeria we denied our history. Sad, Beni Kingdom was once a great empire that's a fact

They will still blame the Ibos for this history. Those who see Ibos as enemies will know no peace. Ibos are very diplomatic people, they help develop societies they find themselves. Edo people should know that they are by default called Ibos.

The Balogun had addressed the issue as a true Omoluabi - you put your point across to elders respectfully. The Bini’s do not even own Eko. They owned it for a period in time. Britain colonised Nigeria, do they still own it? Fulani’s keep encroaching on other peoples land and demabdng tax, but do they own Kaduna, or Nasarawa or Benue or Ilorin? Please please please, Lagos is Yoruba land, end of!!!

Using the Oba's logic, the Yoruba found Benin since the first 'Oba' was a prince from Ile-Ife? No, Benin did not find Lagos/Eko, they conquered and took over the rulership of one of the Awori settlements called Eko (Isale Eko). The Ife did not create nor found Benin, their Prince and his lineage became the King of Benin.

Permit me to let you in on some secret legality, perhaps put pour some fuel on the japa syndrome. Did you that from 1899 to I will say 1929 at least, the citizens of Lagos had exactly the same rights, “exactly the same” (had to type it twice) as a British citizen. Therefore if you are able to trace your direct family lineage to a parent or grand parent that was born during this period, you might have a legitimate claim and the right to emigrate to the UK by descent. I say fuck it, gather a few

I stand corrected, 1914 at least not 1929. Post 1914, there is no documentation as to whether the stance was specifically abolished, it might still be dormant.
