Electricity is a vital economic enabler and essential to quality of life. For the IESO to support continued growth and prosperity in communities across Ontario, it has prioritized building next generation skills and creating opportunities. That includes in-person engagements like the Six Nations of the Grand River Energy & Employment Fair, where the IESO was on-hand to collaborate with community members, and offer future candidates personal perspectives on what it’s like working in the energy sector.

As we usher in 2024, let's take a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey of The Region Three Essequibo Islands-West Demerara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (R3CCI) in 2023. It was a year marked by significant strides in economic development and community engagement, starting with our contribution to the national budget, advocating for growth-focused policies. This set the tone for a year of proactive involvement and impactful initiatives. Key highlights included our pivotal meeting with Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters and the Centre for Local Business Development, unlocking new opportunities in the Oil & Gas sector. We also engaged in meaningful dialogues with the Regional Democratic Council and the Guyana Police Force, bolstering regional security and creating a conducive environment for private sector growth. Our participation as observers in the Local Government Elections 2023 underscored our commitment to governance and democratic processes. Additionally, our efforts in hosting ISO certification training and our proactive outreach during Agriculture Month, particularly the significant joint ventures announced by R3CCI members, APSOL and Latitude Geospatial, have set a new benchmark for our region's growth. The year culminated with a successful job fair and a sold-out Annual Holiday Mixer, both of which fostered jobs and new business opportunities and further strengthened our community network. As we step into 2024 with renewed vigor, R3CCI is excited to unveil a calendar filled with even more engaging and beneficial activities for our members. Join us as we continue to forge paths for prosperity in Region 3! #R3CCI #YearInReview #EconomicDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #Region3 #Guyana #BusinessGrowth #NetworkingSuccess 🚀🌐🤝

Jointly with the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training of Cambodia, and the National Employment Agency, the ILO has co-organised the “National Career and Productivity Fair 2023” and event to provide the opportunity to young Cambodians to access information on the dynamic national labour market and concrete vacancies to which they can apply. This fair bring together academic and training institutions, relevant national Ministries, private sector and public companies. This edition of this national fair has put digital transition and just transition at the heart of the discussions and debates. In the context of this National Fair the ILO, through the ProSSCE-ASEAN project is organising and moderating and panel discussion “Youth Entrepreneurship: Fostering Decent Employment Opportunities” to discuss some of the main challenges as well as opportunities faced by young entrepreneurs in Cambodia, and how employers’ organisations and policy makers can support entrepreneurs to make new and existing enterprises more productive, competitive, sustainable and resilient.

Recently I have found myself in the same situation as many other municipalities… no summer students. As puzzling as this is for employers, it has me thinking as to what has caused such a significant absence in the government summer student employment rates. I feel that historically university students would gravitate towards summer government jobs, and now municipalities struggle with stark student employment numbers. What do I think the largest loss is? P.S. It’s not decreased productivity as a result of less employees. EXPOSURE. The loss is in the sudden lack of exposure to young people into the government sector. Truth is, I would not work in government today had I not had summer employment with Parks Canada. It was during my time as a student where my passion for government bloomed. I truly believe that if municipalities are not able to find a solution to this problem that there will be huge effects in the future. Think of the growing knowledge gap that increases with fewer and fewer young people entering the municipal sphere. What needs to be done to solve this issue? Let’s be real, minimum wage (or even slightly above) does not actually cover minimum living expenses, and certainly not tuition fees. Municipalities need to get real about student wages and be above what they think is competitive. Not only should this bring in new students, hopefully you can hold onto them for a few summers! Municipalities also need to market themselves. Attend career fairs, send job postings to local high schools and post to local job boards, place your municipality where the student are. Be desirable! Be a place where students want to spend their few months away from school. Lastly, fully appreciate and acknowledge the importance and contributions of students. The reality is that many municipalities cannot complete many tasks and projects without employment of summer students. Treat them as an investment and a potential longstanding member of your municipalities team. They won’t forget that. I would love to hear your thoughts! Are you having the same struggle? Do you have any tips or tricks to bring in more students?
