Local government minister Simon Hoare wants council pension funds to merge - always a controversial topic for the Local Government Pension Scheme. But George Graham says that as well as debating 'if' pension funds should merge, the sector should also be considering the question of 'how'. And his Local Government Chronicle opinion piece offers the South Yorkshire Pensions Authority as a unique model that could avoid some of the barriers that currently put funds off merging. #localgovernment #pensions #lgps #councils #mergers https://lnkd.in/eEsHTmJN

A close working collaboration between funds prior to any possible merger is the way forward. Whilst an actual merger was on the cards (but subsequently rejected) many funds could learn from what has been achieved by the Falkirk Pension Fund and Lothian Pension Fund in Scotland (where LGPS funds are not formally pooled as they are in England)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a tricky topic George
