Facing the odds (in the workplace) and aging with grace 🪞👑✨ In today's society, the workplace has become increasingly focused on youthfulness and attractiveness. For women, in particular, there is a strong emphasis maintaining a certain level of beauty and fitness in order to secure job opportunities. Unfortunately, this often means that older women may face discrimination when it comes to finding employment. According to statistics, women who are considered more attractive are more likely to be hired over older women who are perceived as less attractive. In a study conducted by the Journal of Applied Psychology, it was found that attractiveness played a significant role in the hiring process, with attractive candidates being preferred over those who were deemed less attractive. I don’t know about you, but as a middle aged woman… this scares me 🫣 Furthermore, youthfulness is often equated with energy, dynamism, and innovation in the workplace. Employers may prioritize hiring younger women under the assumption that they will bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the job. It is essential for women to challenge these stereotypes and biases in the workplace. <<We should embrace our unique qualities, experiences, and skills, regardless of age or appearance>> Ultimately, women should be valued and recognized for their talents, expertise, and contributions to the workforce, rather than solely based on their outward appearance. By breaking down these barriers and advocating for equality and diversity in the workplace, we can create a more inclusive and empowering environment for all women. ~~~~~ AGAINST THE ODDS - How I fight stereotypes as a 40 year old woman 👩🏻💪🏻 ✨ I make sure to showcase my skills, experience, and accomplishments to potential employers. By highlighting my achievements and contributions, I demonstrate my value and worth beyond my appearance. ✨Networking within my industry and maintaining professional relationships has helped me access job opportunities and overcome biases based on my age. ✨ Continuously learning and developing in my field is crucial to staying relevant and competitive. Investing in training, certifications, and staying informed about industry trends shows my commitment to growth and adaptation. ✨ Advocating for myself and speaking up against age discrimination is important as well. Addressing any discriminatory behavior or bias I encounter and seeking support from HR or other resources can help create a more inclusive work environment for myself and others. Some say that you can learn a about a person by simply seeing where they live 👨🏫🏠✨ Fun fact: I don’t live in a big city! As a youth, I couldn’t imagine living in the middle of nowhere. However, with age, I have learned to respect and appreciate the simple things. Some people cry silent tears when they are in pain. ✨💕🫶 #mentalhealthawarenessmonth I’m no stranger to depression and anxiety, and I have first handed seen the physical results from untreated mental health conditions. It’s a dark place no parent, sibling, child, and/or friend should ever witness… There’s no pain like holding someone you love in your arms, knowing they have given up on their life. They don’t want to die, but the pain of their mental reality is unbearable. They want an escape that makes it all stop. Mental health is a topic that often gets pushed aside, ignored, or stigmatized in our society. But the reality is that mental health issues affect millions of people every day, regardless of age, gender, race, or background. As we mark Mental Health Awareness Month this May, it's important to shine a light on the importance of mental health and the need for greater understanding, support, and resources for those struggling with their mental well-being. The statistics are staggering – over to 700K people die by suicide every year*, and for every person who dies by suicide, there are many more who attempt it. Suicide rates are highest among individuals aged 15-29, making it the second leading cause of death in this age group globally. These numbers are not just statistics – they represent real people, with real stories, real struggles, and real pain. It's time to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and start having honest, open conversations about our mental well-being. We need to educate ourselves and others about mental health issues, seek help when needed, and support those who are struggling. By talking openly about mental health, sharing our own experiences, and showing empathy and understanding towards others, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. Let's use this month as an opportunity to raise awareness, educate ourselves and others, and show our support for those struggling with their mental health.
