A Story of A Drink That Ties Two Nations Together

It has been a while since Georgia secured its reputation as a paradise for wine connoisseurs and lovers. And as tourism continues to boom, the country's national spirit, chacha, is now experiencing a spotlight.

Chacha has gained popularity worldwide and foreign tourists never forget to mention that they adore this drink.

Wine plays an irreplaceable role in Georgia's culture and folklore. Alongside Christianity and the unique Georgian language, it is a pillar of national identity. The Georgian nation is one of the most ancient ones in the world with a consecutive tradition of viticulture and winemaking. It has a record of thousands of years of vintages which continues to this day. Archeological finds have scientifically proven that Georgia is the birthplace of wine with the first ever evidence of wine in the history of mankind.

Georgian wine was made in underground clay vessels called "qvevri" and natives have been preserving this cultural phenomenon for centuries.

According to the local tales, God gave Georgians wine, and the devil, in a fit of competitive jealousy, gifted them with a far more potent concoction – chacha.

Chacha

If you are looking for a rarity, let us introduce you to Moriel.

Georgian Pomace Brandy

Chacha (Georgian: ჭაჭა) is a Georgian pomace brandy, solid and clear (ranging between 50% alcohol in case commercially produced to 85% for homebrew).

Chacha is a grape marc spirit produced from grape pomace - the residue left after making wine. In Georgia, the term "chacha" refers to grape distillate. It may also be made from unripe or wild grapes. Other common fruits or herbs are tangerines, figs, oranges, mulberries, etc.

Traditionally, chacha has always been only a homebrewed drink of Georgian people.  Yet, Morieli is proud to pass the spirit of victories and revive history through the distinctive and unique high alcoholic drink “ Chacha” - Kings’ Favorite.

Kosher

We are thrilled to unveil a vibrant new world for King's favorite chacha with an original creation, timeless aroma, and ancient mystery.

Kosher is one of the first chachas out there, and We at Morieli are proud that this iconic drink is the first product we created.

Our Kocher Chacha is made under the strict supervision of the Rabbi and according to Kosher rules.

Morieli's “Kings’ Favorite Chacha" is a unique, distinctive, high-alcohol Georgian traditional drink. We perform a double distillation to reach higher grades of alcohol, purity, and taste that lasts through eternity.

The main ingredient of our spirit is the unrepeatable and one of the oldest Georgian grape varieties - Saperavi chacha. Georgia is a homeland of at least 525 distinctive grape varieties. This is fascinating particularly for a small country like Georgia to have so many indigenous vine varieties considering the fact that numerous unique grape blends have become extinct worldwide. Saperavi is a “Magnum Opus” of Georgian vine culture. Apart from the color, Saperavi grapes are distinctive for their rich fragrance, strong taste, and great aging potential.

Our Chacha is characterized by delicate grape aromas, harsh white color, and a velvety taste crafted to guide you to the unforgettable journey of history and authentic tastes. As we love to put it, it is a taste of history in one drink.

When History Meets Present

To honor the symbiosis between Georgian and Jewish cultures, we implemented the symbolics of both nations in our logo, which also celebrates Georgian-Jewish centuries-old friendship.

That could be why every bottle of Morieli's alcoholic beverages has a story to tell. A tale of how two nations that have been living together in harmony for more than twenty-six centuries.

That is the essence of why we created Moriel - our aim is to help the world discover the history of Georgian-Jewish relations with the help of the art of winemaking. Our mission is to popularize the history of two nations and their bond with the help of storytelling and luxurious spirits that offer the ultimate flavor profile and tasting experience. We were inspired by this long-lasting friendship and created a drink with a long-lasting taste to celebrate it - Further we look into the past, the better we taste today.

Our drinks are crafted to pass the legend of Two Kings from generation to generation - a story of King David of Israel and David the Builder of Georgia. These two historical figures made an enormous impact on the development and flourishing of the two nations. It was strongly believed among Georgians, that the Bagrations’ ancestry, which ruled Georgia for centuries, was directly related to King David of Israel.

David (1000 BCE) was the second king of ancient Israel. He founded the Judaean dynasty and united all the tribes of Israel under a single monarch. His son Solomon expanded the empire that David built. David is an important figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

David IV, named David the Builder (1073—1125), was king of Georgia (1089–1125). Sometimes known as David II, he became co-ruler with his father, Giorgi II, in 1089. David defeated the Turks in the Battle of Didgori (1122) and captured Tbilisi. Under his leadership, Georgia became the most robust state in Caucasia. Thanks to him, Georgia survived as a nation.

Georgian actor and poet Giorgi Giligashvili was so inspired by the story of Moriel and the two kings that he wrote a poem for us momentarily.

Georgian calligraphy expert, David Maisuradze has exclusively created a handwritten version of the poem influenced by the Mkhedruli writing style which was widely used in the epoch of King David the builder of Georgia.

Georgian manuscript legacy is a cultural and national phenomenon. By creating the unique handwritten version of the poem, we're trying to promote the art of calligraphy and emphasize the beauty and rarity of Georgian script which has a centuries-old tradition.

The poem has been transcreated into Jewish and handwritten by the World Rabbi of Georgian Jews and we are honored to include his script in our brand's identity.

Certain Things Are Forever

At Moriel, we aim to tell a story of Georgian-Jewish friendship with both the verbal and visual aspects of our branding as not only the history but the symbolics of the two people have something in common. As a proven birthplace of wine, Georgia has vine and grape as its most prominent symbols, while the olive tree plays a significant role in Jewish culture. The essence of this connection is that the olive tree and vine are the only two plants that cannot be grafted with other plants. Hence the elements of vine and olive tree on our logo.

Moreover, our logo also presents "Alef and Ani," incorporated into our visual identity to celebrate the world's two one of the most ancient languages - Georgian and Jewish. The custom shape created for Moriel is a synergy of the first letters from both alphabets.

Aleph, in Jewish culture, represents the oneness of God. The letter consists of an upper yud, a lower yud, and a vav leaning on a diagonal. The upper yud depicts the hidden and inexpressible characteristics of God. The lower yud portrays God's revelation and presence in the world. Numerologically, Yud represents 10 and the vav represents 6. The Aleph symbol, therefore, is represented as 10+10+6 and equals 26. 26=God.

Ani, in the Georgian alphabet, is the first letter expressing the evolution of the Georgian writing system. The Georgian language had three writing systems: Asomtavruli, Nuskhuri, and Mkhedruli.

The combination of these two letters has a unique place in our logo and our hearts.
