Is your Rs 500 note real? Here's how to check

New Delhi: Coming across fake currency is nothing new. Every now and then people are tricked into accepting fake notes. Knowing if the Rs 500 note lying in the pocket is real or duplicate, could be difficult for the common man and to fight this, the Reserve Bank of India came out with pointers on identifying a fake note.
Taking into account the circulation of fake notes in the market, the RBI came up with a list of pointers on differentiation a fake Rs 500 note from real. Here's how it can be checked:
1. If a person keeps the Rs 500 note in front on light, they will see 500 written in special places
2. Keeping the note at a 45 degree angle in front of the eye will also let the person see 500 written in this special place
3. 500 written at the same place in Devanagari can also be observed
4. The orientation and relative position of Mahatma Gandhi’s photo has been shifted to the right in the centre
5. The note will have India written on it
6. The colour of the security thread could be seen changing to indigo from green when the note is bend slightly
7. Governor's signature, guarantee clause, promise clause and RBI emblem have been moved to the right
8. Mahatma Gandhi’s photo and electrotype watermark are also visible on the note
9. Numbers printed on the top left and bottom right side of the note grow left to right
10. The colour of the 500 written on the note changes from green to blue
11. The right side of the note features the Ashoka Pillar
12. The print year can be seen on the note
13. Swachh Bharat’s logo is printed with its slogan
14. Language panel is placed towards the centre
15. It displays a picture of the Red Fort with the Indian flag
16. 500 is printed in Devanagari
For the visually impaired, the RBI maintained that raised printing of Mahatma Gandhi's portrait, Ashoka emblem, identification mark will continue along with:
1. Circle with Rs 500 in raised print on the right
2. 5 bleed lines on left and right in raised print
In its recent report on fake notes, the RBI had stated that banks had received fake notes worth Rs 5.45 crore between 2020 and 2021. A total of 2,08,625 fake notes were found, out of which the banks caught 2,00,518 notes while RBI found 8107 fake notes.
PM Narendra Modi had in December 2016 banned the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes in a bid to tackle high-enomination fake currency, mostly printed in Pakistan.
