Head Over Heels, a jukebox musical that made its Broadway debut last week, is based on poet and courtier Sir Philip Sidney’s 16th-century Middle English text The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia, albeit set in Ancient Greece and soundtracked to music by the Go-Go’s. It’s a freewheeling combination of time periods: The show’s costuming harkens back to the styles of the Shakespearean era (there are delicate corset dresses and stiff Elizabethan collars), but the iconic girl group’s ’80s hits undeniably serve as the show’s backbone.
In retrospect, the Go-Go’s’ bold sense of style was as fun as their music. They weren’t afraid of overtly feminine styles, but they never lost their New Wave edge, combining plaid schoolgirl skirts, polka-dotted blouses, and even baby pink marabou-trimmed dresses.
While the Go-Go’s were remarkable for being the first hit all-female band to play their own instruments, there’s a long lineage of like-minded groups fronted by women that followed (and even preceded them). Whether it’s Sleater-Kinney’s sharp inclination for button-downs and argyle vests or the Runaways’ youthful tight T-shirts and wide-legged pants, all sorts of throwback rockstar looks are easy to emulate today. So pick your favorite of the bunch—the Slits, the Go-Go’s, the Bangles, Sleater-Kinney, the Shangri-Las, Savages, the Runaways, and the Raincoats—and shop their distinct styles below.
