The volume presented is an outset of the launched
series of “Monuments of Georgian Material Culture
Abroad.” Its establishment became highly topical
thanks to the measures implemented in different
countries for the purposes of tracking of “Georgian
Trace”, which envisaged inventory, registration, conservation
and restoration of various types of Georgian
antiquities scattered in foreign countries. Some
of the Projects have already been completed; some
are in progress, while several of them are to be implemented
in future. Consequently, the publications
issued within the scope of this series, apart of the final
result, will as well refer to the process of projects
implementation, at list to some extent, which hopefully
will also be interesting to our readers.
This first issue is dedicated to the temple of Oshki,
one of the miracles of Georgian architecture, currently
located in the Republic of Turkey. Within the
framework of the Joint Project of Registration of
Monuments carried out in 2008 in cooperation with
our Turkish colleagues both in Turkey and Georgia,
all significant engineering-constructional aspects of
Oshki temple were studied, coupled with creation of
the necessary legal grounds for rescue and further
rehabilitation of other important monuments. What
is the most important - the opportunity of restoration
of monuments of Georgian culture located in
Tao-Klarjeti gradually becomes more and more feasible.
The book repeatedly outlines the enormous significance
of Oshki temple for the whole of Georgian
cultural heritage and can be regarded as one more
remainder of the badly need of urgent rescue, protection
and study of samples of our culture located
outside the country.
in the Ottoman Empire.
Numerous old Georgian Asomtavruli (uncial)
inscriptions incised in stone or made in
paint prove that in the years 963-976 a monastery
was founded in Oshki. The church and
other monastic structures were built at the
behest of the representatives of the Tao-Klarjeti
house of the Bagrationis (958-1001), King
David and his brother Bagrat Eristhavta-Eri-
was headed by a certain Grigol, who is never
mentioned in other sources.
David III, King of Tao-Klarjeti, a political
figure of a great renown in Georgian history,
was held in high honour at the court of the
Byzantine Empire; owing to his military and
diplomatic activities he was conferred the title
of Magistros and subsequently that of the
Kuropalates. During his almost half-a-century
reign he greatly expanded the borders of his
was at this time that at his personal initiative
and by his assistance many monasteries
and fortresses were built (apart from Oshki,
Khakhuli, Otkhta Eklesia and the Parkhali
monastery were also built).
In its time the monastery comprised structures
meant for various purposes: the church
dedicated to St John the Baptist, various chapels,
scriptoriums, refectories, monks’ cells
and structures meant for storage and other
domestic purposes.
In 1036 part of the church (east and south
apses) were adorned with frescoes at the behest
of Patrician Jojik, an outstanding statesman
of Tao (some fragments of the wall painting
with the legends have survived).
In the years 1022-1025 by the order of the
Byzantine Emperors Basil II (976-1025) and his
brother Constantine VIII (1025-1028) the church
was roofed anew, the dome was covered with
The four-line inscription incised on the
stone above the window on the east facade
is very interesting, it exalts Bagrat and David
– the initiators of the construction of the
cathedral; it also mentions the first stewards
of the monastery Michael and Ioane and the
master builder Grigol. The inscription is dated
to the years 963-866, it is the oldest of all the
inscriptions of the church. On either side of
the window border a stylized representation
of the sun (on the left) and Solomon’s star (on
the right) are delineated within circles – the
latter is one of the emblems of the Bagrationi
house; it was believed that the Bagrationis
were direct descendants of the Prophet David.
On the tympanum above the southern
door a 12-line inscription in the Georgian
Asomtavruli (uncial) script is made in paint; it
narrates that the church was built by Bagrat
(†966) and David (†1001), sons of King Adarnase
Kuropalates, the construction was headed
by the master builder Grigol; it also mentions
the annual expenses of the construc-
were paid as wages to the stone–masons and
other labourers and also for hiring the oxen
50 litres of iron, 250 poods (a pood – 16,30
preserved in the Erzurum Museum); one of
them (height 130cm) shows St John the Baptist
one refers to the exact date of the beginning
of the construction - Tuesday, October 2, the
year 963.
The church of Oshki is a triconch-type cruciform-domed
structure; the interior length is
40.6m; the width – 27m; the height up to the
apex of the dome – 34m; its eastern, southern
and northern arms end in apses, which is
characteristic of the triconch-type structures,
the western arm is rectangular. On both sides
of each apse there are vaulted chambers of
almost similar size and outline, arranged in
two tiers, each terminating in a semicircular
apse.
Originally there seems to have been a choir
at the west wall of the western arm. In the
north the western arm is adjoined by a fourstorey
gallery, its first floor was ladies’ chapel
(“Sakalebo”), below it there was a vaulted
chamber terminating in an apse. An open gallery-porch,
covered with a zig-zag roof on the
outside, extends along the south wall of the
western arm. Its interior space is divided into
two parts by four columns. The northern part

consists of an apse and a bay covered with a
shallow, square, segmented dome. The southern
part is comparatively narrower, opening
through wide arches in the south. All the four
columns are lavishly adorned with ornaments
and figural reliefs; they have no analogues in
Georgian architecture.
In the church interior fragments of wall
painting dating to different times have survived;
the remnants of the fresco “Christ in
Glory”, represented in the niche of the southwestern
subcupolar pier, is contemporary
with the construction of the church; in the
year 1036 the composition represented in the
chancel apse was created, it showed Christ Enthroned
among the Archangels, below there
was the Virgin Orans among the Apostles and
St John the Baptist, at the very end the Fathers
of the Church, saints and deacons (preserved
only fragmentarity) were portrayed; to
the same period belongs the damaged compositions
of “the Crucifixion” and “the Deesis”
depicted in the apse of the southern arm,
of a saint is inscribed: to the right of David
there is the name of the Virgin, on the side
of Bagrat there is that of St John the Baptist.
There seems to have been a fresco representation
of “Christ in Glory”, which is an abridged
version of “the Deesis”.
The exterior walls of the church arms (except
the western ones) are adorned with
blind arches and triangular niches of various
sizes inserted within; in the arches, growing
in size towards the centre, there are various
kinds of floral and geometric ornaments and
representations of animals, birds and separate
symbols.
The ornamentation of the south front is
the most noteworthy: above the window, in
the middle arch of the southern arm, there
is a representation of an eagle with its talons
sunk in the back of a bull. In the upper area
of the arch there are frontal figures of two
archangels accompanied with corresponding
legends, Michael - on the left, Gabriel – on
the right.
St Simeon the Miracle-Maker, clad in monk’s
garb, is depicted.
The slightly raised surfaces of the northwestern
and south-western sides of the column
show large, half–length figures of the
Syrian healers St Cosmas (in the north) and
St Damiane (in the south), both accompanied
with Asomtavruli inscriptions in red.
Near the south wall of the western arm
there once was an underground three–chamber
vaulted crypt, now it is filled with debris
and rubble.
At a distance of about 60m to the northwest
of the church there are remnants of the
refectory; in the north-west it is attached by
a domed structure, square in plan – the scriptorium
and library of the monastery.
250m away to the south-west of the church
there are ruins of two chapels, they are considered
to have been built a little earlier than
the church.
The Oshki Monastery, as one of the most
significant monastic centres was a great educational
seat as well. At various times many
outstanding statesmen, scholars, theologians,
hymnists, calligraphers and artists lived and
were active here. Many great monuments of
literature that were created, copied or translated
within its walls, have come down to this
day, they are preserved in Georgia and at the
Georgian Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos,
among which there is a complete translation
of the so - called Oshki Bible copied here in
the years 979-980 (now preserved at the Iviron
Monastery on Mt. Athos); it was commissioned
by Tornike Eristavi, a nobleman from
Tao, a great statesman and religious figure,
David Kuropalates’ famous commander-inchief,
one of the founders of the Iviron Monastery
on Mt. Athos; in the year 995 Bishop
Stepane Mtbevari commissioned David Oshkeli
and Archipos to make a copy of the 1st
Gospel of Tbeti, now preserved at the National
Library of Russia in Petersburg; the Oshki
Gospels adorned with an exquisite title-page
cross and miniatures of the Evangelists, was
copied at the Oshki Monastery too in the year
1033; it is preserved at the Mestia Museum.
Numerous icons, crosses and other church
items were also created in Oshki; among
them was a gold plated silver processional
cross made at the behest of David Kurapalates;
it was created at the end of the 10th
century by the goldsmith Asat (preserved at
the Georgian National Museum).
The great church of Oshki played a tremendous
role in the further development of
Georgian architecture.
This magnificent monument, now on the
verge of complete destruction, calls for an
immediate help.
