"We can only talk about architecture after we agree that
architecture does not mean just construction but also implies
creation of space, social environment, a universe around us,
because architecture exists on the verge of vision and reality."
This conception, voiced by Aaron Betsky, director of the
11th Venice Biennale of 2008, served as a backbone for the
exposition.
"Mirza Shafi Street Development - Old City Ambience and
Emanation" - one of the project exhibited at Venice Biennale
2008 by the Georgian architects - answers the above conception
as follows: "we look for a comfortable architectural identity
in old and in new. We wish to feel "at home" in the modern
world. The driving force behind our creative activities is the
ambience, the emanation of old city".

Redesigned
Alexander
Park
Still another beautifully decorated park with fountains and
lanterns opened in Tbilisi. Alexander Park exists since the 18th
century. This old park remained untended for so many years that
it required urgent rehabilitation and renovation. Rehabilitation project
started last spring and was finished in 7 months. The 3 ha
area was decorated with new plants; lanterns and benches were
installed; special paths were set up for disabled people.
Rehabilitation works in April 9 Park will be finalized in May 2009.
What is most important, two more public gardens are being renovated
in Tbilisi at the time being: population of Tbilisi will soon
be able to spend their time in redesigned Dedaena and March
9 Gardens.
Gamgeoba of Tbilisi had announced a tender on landscape
22
design and public space reconstruction of April 9, Dedaena and
March 9 Parks. The tender was won by truly original reconstruction
projects, created by architect David Khurtsilava.
STYLE Magazine has had an opportunity to interview architect
David Khurtsilava on his projects.
Landscape architecture and design attract increasing
attention in our architectural reality. Consequently, most of
residential houses, large apartment blocks and public spaces
are designed and approved for construction only if they are
accompanied with a relevant landscape design solution. Our
country has rich experience in landscape architecture. How
would you comment the historical tradition of landscape archi-
tecture in Tbilisi?
Tbilisi and its suburbs had been decorated with gardens
since the middle ages. City plan drafted by Vakhushti Batonishvili
in 1735 marks 11 gardens within the city and in its outskirts.
Their majority belonged to aristocrats and members of the royal
family.
Most of the city and its gardens together with their constructions,
fountains and irrigation networks were destroyed during invasion
of Agha Mohammed Khan in 1795.
Later on, as we can see from city plans created in the first
decades of the 19th century, the green part of the city was restored.
Some gardens were restored in early 19th century in Sololaki,
Seidabad and present-day Botanical Garden areas. At a certain

distance from Tbilisi popular Ortachala and Krtsanisi Gardens were
created.
On what principles was creation of public gardens based?
Due to the complex relief Tbilisi, design of gardens in the
city was mostly based on free, landscape principles of planning
and plant distribution.
European traditions of landscape design were gradually introduced
in the 1820-1830’ies. It is in this period that planting of
public gardens started.
When was the first European-style public garden created
in Tbilisi?
The first of such public gardens was created in the 1820’ies
in Sololaki area. It was called “palace garden” and was located
behind the Viceroy’s residence.
Prior to developing the Alexander Park reconstruction
project, you carefully studied the history of this public garden.
Can you please tell us about this in a couple of words?
Alexander Park was established in the center of new Tbilisi,
which was a suburb back then. This suburb area developed on
the north-western outskirts of downtown Kala district in the middle
ages; in the first half of the 19th century it covered presentday
Sololaki, Rustaveli Avenue and its adjoining territory spread
out between Mtkvari and Mtatsminda.
Alexander Park was designed in 1859 by German architect
Otto Jacob Simonson. His project included fountains, terraces
and other constructions. The planting process was supervised
by German botanist and landscape architect Heinrich Carl Verner
Scharer, who was appointed inspector of Tbilisi gardens in 1859;
he also supervised restoration of Viceroy’s residence garden and
took part in development of Borjomi and Tetri Tskaro Parks. In
1861-1889 Scharer was a director of Tbilisi Botanical Garden.
Decoration of Alexander Park area took 4 years. In 1863
this English-style park was launched and named Alexander Park
in honor of Emperor Alexander II.
At different times constructions of different architectural
value were built in Alexander Park. Did their existence
influence your project?
Alexander Park area contained the headquarters of Caucasian
Agricultural Society and Pushkin Library (present-day Department
of Monument Protection).
In 1885, construction of “the Temple of Glory” started in the
western part of the Park (architect Albert Zaltsman). The construction
went on until 1893; nowadays this building houses the
Georgian State Gallery.
In the lower part of the Park – near the exit to Nikoladze
Bridge, there was Alexander Nevsky Chapel, and the lower terrace
housed the Armenian Gregorian St. Nicholas Church.
Unfortunately, both these constructions were destroyed in the Soviet
period.
In 1910 construction of St. Nicholas Kashveti Church was
finalized. The initial church was built in this place in the 6th century
and reconstructed several times later on; finally, the present-day
Kashveti Church was built here in 1904-1910 according
to Leopold Bielfeld’s project.
There also was a number of temporary constructions in
Alexander Park; at different times, several monuments were installed
there.
Alexander Park changed significantly in the Soviet period.
What were the main reasons of this transformation?
In the middle of the 20th century the garden was divided
into two almost equal parts by a tram route. Construction of a
new street considerably diminished the territory of the park and
damaged its integrity.
In 1958 the park was increased at the expense of former
Hygiene House and plants and trees of rare varieties were planted
there. In the same period, a decorative pool designed by
Z. Tsereteli was arranged in the lower part of the park.
What was the condition of Alexander Park before rehabilitation?
Nowadays the area of the park amounts to 4.3 ha – much
less than it was initially. Not only the area of the garden was
decreased, but its landscape planning structure got disrupted
and collection of rare plants decreased significantly. Besides the
fact that the green surface of the garden was left untreated for
a long time, some illegal constructions were installed there.
When will the rehabilitation works finish in the gardens
we have listed above?
Rehabilitation of April 9 Park is virtually finalized; as
regards Dedaena and March 9 Gardens, their rehabilitation will
probably last through until August 2009. The total area of these
three gardens amounts to 5 ha. Youth sports grounds, an artificial
alpinist wall and bookseller stalls will be set up in Dedaena
Garden to make it a favorite resting place for children and
teenagers. As regards the March 9 Garden, it will offer artists
an opportunity to arrange sales and exhibitions.
RESIDENTIAL HOUSE IN AMAGLEBA (FORMER DAVITASHVILI) STREET, TBILISI
Professionalism implying the level of skill
Professionalism of architects Mamuka Chkhaidze
and Archil Razmadze is efficiently revealed by the public
or residential constructions they have designed, by
architectural expressivity of their volumetric compositions,
harmonious integrity of the whole and its constituent
parts. Spatial-planning solution of the compositions,
purposeful utilization of various construction mate-
rials, texture and color effects, matching of the building
with its surroundings – this is a guarantee to successful
architectural solution. The architects found
architectural image of their constructions on modern
architectural composition and flexibility. As a result, the
buildings with their unusual forms seamlessly merge
with their natural setting. Motion of oblique, curved and
diagonal surfaces on the facades integrates the buildings
with their surroundings.
The authors have combined two seemingly controversial
qualities – careful approach toward the architectural
setting and strength of expression. While
designing a project of a residential house or a hotel
the architect feels like a stage director having to pres

ent to spectators a chain of harmony and contrast.
A range of innovative solutions, starting with lavish
expanse of glazed surfaces and prominently shaped
facades provides the designs with all the characteristic
features of modern urban architecture, further
highlighted by localized character of special structure,
technical integrity of construction schemes, materials
and artistic forms, rationality of creative solution.
The unity of expressive forms is achieved due
to the variety of details serving to achieve the main
goal. Every building is integrated with its surroundings,
while retaining every bit of its individuality. Each
of them has independent artistic significance and special
emotional coloring.
On May 1 Dutch company “Dutch Design Garden”
arranged launch-of-a-season presentation in Tbilisi.
Dutch Design Garden established itself in Georgia in
2007. Founder of this business is prominent Dutch designer
Martin Veltkamp. Mr. Veltkamp has been engaged
in professional activities for 25 years already; together
with his creative team he designs gardens all over
the world.
Dutch Design Garden has already realized several
important public and private garden design projects
in Georgia; the most notable of them is Dadiani Palace
garden in Zugdidi.
The largest of the company’s Georgia-based projects
was recently approved by Tbilisi City Hall. The
project implies construction of an entertainment complex
in Rike area of old Tbilisi. Design of the project
New Season
of Dutch
Design
Garden
belongs to Martin Veltkamp.
It is noteworthy that in spite of current economic
crisis Dutch Design Garden has made important investments
in Georgia and plans to continue its activities in
this direction in the future.
Dutch Design Garden offers its clients 4000 varieties
of decorative trees and plants and exclusive waterresistant
garden furniture.

The company’s showroom features innumerable
objects intended for decoration of gardens
and verandas, starting with trampolines and ending
with scented candles, parasols and rare plants.
Wide choice of products can fully satisfy the
taste of any consumer. The company imports
goods from Spain, Belgium, USA and many other
countries – this is one of the main reasons
accounting for the high quality it offers to its
clients.
Dutch Design Garden also distributes topquality
English Farrow And Ball paints. These
paints, distinguished with their bright and lasting
colors, can be efficiently applied to any kind
of surface.
Presentation of Dutch Design Garden was
arranged in the company’s office and garden.
The ceremony was attended by Mayor of Tbilisi
and City Hall officials, Georgian businessmen
and representatives of the Chamber of
Commerce. At the very first step inside the presentation
area we found ourselves in a fantastic
world of original design and uniquely beautiful
plants, created by Martin Veltkamp. Designer’s
creative vision and effort interpreted formal
beauty with singular freedom of talent and refined
intellect. Within the integral composition combinations
of particular details and nuances stand
out like sculptures charged with static energy,
and this sculptural space imposes its own rules
upon the universe. The diversity of vantage points
brings to the fore varying scales and incessant
motion of the objects.
The spaces designed by Martin Veltcamp
are strange, infinitely strange. Garden “interior”,
minor architectural forms, dynamics of still figures,
natural colors… Surprising is their diversity,
unexpected is expression of their form…
For a brief instant, we find ourselves face
to face with our host…
His shrewd glance, shining with creative energy,
hints at something, half-hides and half-reveals
the reality, just like the beautiful art he has creates
– the art so unusual and exquisite that
you cannot restrain your admiration.
In nature the metaphysical plane of beauty
is not limited to purely aesthetic perception
– on the contrary, it is complex and boundless,
making it extremely difficult to transform everything
into meaningful matter, to find ideal form
reflecting inner spirituality. But a true artist is
capable of winning this hard battle.
Memorial
to the
dead
warriors
On January 21-22 2009 Ministry of Culture, Monument
Protection and Sport and Ministry of Defense of Georgia
announced a competition on the concept of Mukhatgverdi
Communal Grave in memoriam of the soldiers killed during
the military conflict of August 2008. Competition terms were
published in “24 Hours” newspaper and on the web pages of
both ministries; the action was publicized by Georgian TV channels.
Competition materials were retrieved by 38 architects and
entries were submitted by 24 of them.
Evaluation of the entries was entrusted to a commission,
formed under decree no. 3/9 issued by Minister of Culture,
Monument Protection and Sport on February 23 2009, and
comprising the following members:
Marine Chogoshvili - deputy minister of Culture, Monument
Protection and Sports of Georgia and chairman of the jury;
Nikoloz Abashidze - architect; David Abuladze - architect, president
of the Union of Architects of Georgia; Nodar Amashukeli
- architect, dean of the architectural faculty of Tbilisi State Academy
of Art; Nikoloz Dadiani - member of Architecture, Art and
Restoration Board of the Georgian Patriarchy; Nugzar Davlianidze
- head of capital construction department of the Development
Service of Tbilisi City Hall; Koba Liklikadze - military analyst
of radio “Tavisupleba”, member of Democracy and Development
Foundation; Irakli Zhvania - sculptor; Mamuka Kherkheulidze
- deputy director of the administrative department of the Ministry
of Defense of Georgia; Giorgi Khoshtaria - expert, art critic.
On February 24 2009 competition materials were exhibited
in Tbilisi History Museum.
The jury arranged two working sessions to identify the
best project. The competition was closed; the winning project,
designed by architects Lado and Giorgi Khmaladze, was
announced on February 25, at the exhibition arranged in Karvasla.
Below please find an extract from project explication:
Almost all forms of art have comparatively difficult themes.
In architecture and monumental art such theme is a grave,
which requires increased degree of moderation and rejects all
inexpediency.
And since these young men coming from totally different
walks of life had one destiny - to sacrifice themselves to their
homeland in the August war - the authors decided to found
their conception on this fact and turn Mukhatgverdi cemetery
into one large bed of honor.

The site, sloping from west to east by 6 meters, was a
perfect match for the project.
The cemetery has been broken down into 4 equal parts
by a crossing of two linear and lateral axes. One of these segments
is already “populated”, and the other 3 are comparatively
vacant. As noted above, the whole site is perceived as one
integral memorial grave and the architects strove to realize this
solution by applying homogeneous artistic means. The main -
east - entrance to the cemetery is decorated by two right-angled
triangles standing side by side and forming together a 12-meter
long and 6-meter tall equilateral triangle. Facing vertical sides
of the two triangles are carved; in unity, these carved sides
form an ark shaped like St. Nino’s temple. This polysemantic
image impersonates a gateway into eternity, a door leading from
the mundane world into the heaven, a symbol invisible and
material at the same time, like the souls of the young men
buried in this cemetery and those of the other people, who
devoted their lives to the well-being of our country.
The crossing of linear and lateral axes is decorated by
2.5 meter high concrete composition depicting a shield and a
sword. The monument is crowned by eternal light. Area to the
west from the linear axis, where a solitary fir-tree is growing,
is allocated for a rest zone.
The sloping surface of the site where the graves are located
is paved with decorative stone slabs. The graves themselves
are 100 cm wide and 200 cm long; their surface is lev-
stili #32. 2009
eled and planted with grass; the only dominant is a miniature
model of 12 by 6 meter entrance monument at the head of
each grave. The only difference between the main memorial
and its miniature replicas is that in case of the latter the shape
of St. Nino’s temple is replaced by a transparent cross (or a
vertical slit if the deceased is not a Christian), under which
there is a granite niche containing the soldier’s photo, memorial
inscription and a candle socket.
The perimeter of the cemetery is bordered by a row of cypresses.
Symbolically, this line of tall slim trees stands to guard the
deceased, whose remains will dissipate and feed the “guardians’”
roots, so that in the distant future the heroes lying at the cemetery
will be transfigured into everlasting green monuments.
Cinestar
Cinestar at the Avenue Mall in Zagber
(CROATIA) is the first of six multiplexes to bi
built by the local concern Blitz-CineStar in the
towns of Split, Zadar, Sebenik, Osijek and
Varazdin.
It is located on a large, third-generation
commercial complex at the junction of the main
thoroughfares. Its nine theaters can seat
approximately 1800 spectators and offer stateof-the-art
digital projection systems and ultimate
comfort for spectators.
The project was designed by architect
Marco Rodda, and it integrates the possibility
to manage several lighting ambiances with a
particular attention to safety standards, as
required by a building with this kind of function.
The lighting of areas used for ticket offices,
food services and passing ways has been
achieved with Team fixtures whereas for offices
and meeting rooms the architect has opted for
the Thot modular pendant system with polycarbonate
diffuser of low luminance optics.
Team is a multi-source downlight for halogen
and metal halide lamps. It is made up of
a metal plate counterframe and a metal perimeter
frame, both painted. The painted die-cast
aluminum aptics are adjustable (+/-22*). It is
fitted with the patented FLASH loking system
for 0-30mm false ceilings, which makes installation
operations easier and faster.
Thot is a modular, pendant, ceiling, wall
and recessed lighting system. It is constructed
in extruded aluminum and uses linear T16
fluorescent light sources. Thot is available with
polycarbonate diffuser, extremely low luminance
optics, Dark Light in specular aluminum
or matt aluminum.
Ilirica
In tiny Slovenia, things change at an astonishing speed, if you used to hand out in
Ljubljana just ten years ago, you would very quickly forget the doom and gloom that the
Communist regime had managed to steep all the towns of the former Yugoslavia in.
The head office of Ilirica, one of Slovenia’s most prestigious financial investment firms,
occupies a building with was erected on Slovenska Cesta, one of the town’s busiest thoroughfares,
during the regime.
Architect Marco Rodda is the author of this project too.
The lighting of office spaces and passageways has been achieved with Thot and Sharp
fluorescence systems, fixtures that have proved to perform particularly well thanks to the
use of low luminance optics and polycarbonate diffusers.
Thot is a modular, pendant ceiling , wall and recessed lighting system. It is produced
in extruded aluminum and uses linear T16 fluorescent light sources.Thot is available with
polycarbonate diffuser, axtremely low luminance optics, Dark Light in specular aluminum or
matt aluminum.
Sharp is a lighting system for fluorescent linear single and dual-lamp light sources, single
and dual-emission, available in the wall, ceiling and pendant versions.
The lamp body can be adjusted by 355° by means of the suitable joints. Available with
polycarbonate diffuser, polycarbonate grid screen, Dark Light single-lamp, low luminance,
comfort and Dark Light UGR optics.
International Furniture and Design Exhibition
in Milan - Internazionale del Mobile
stili #32. 2009
On April 22-27 2009 Milan hosted the most important
event in the sphere of furniture production and interior design
- exhibition I Saloni Milano. Apparently, the lack of economic
stability did not have any influence on the creative
potential of designers and furniture manufacturers; in any
case, international sale-exhibition was organized with its usual
luxury and splendor.
2723 exhibitors (including 911 non-Italian companies) featured
their recent achievements at I Saloni and SaloneSatellite.
In the framework of I Saloni program, Salone Internazionale
del Mobile hosted the following events:
- International Furnishing Accessories’ Exhibition;
- Exhibition of young designers SaloneSatellite, representing
a final stage of an open competition;
- Biennial exposition Euroluce, dedicated to the design
of light fixtures.
The main exhibition was accompanied by many other
interesting actions, arranged in galleries, salons and open
plazas around the city. The most notable of these was exhibition
in Palazzo Reale titled “Magnificence and Project” and
dedicated to the five-century history of Italian decorative art
and design. The exhibition offered interesting parallels
between the classical Italian furniture of the past centuries
and the modern Italian design trends.
From among the designs represented at I Saloni, we
would like to specially mention the 10-Unit System, furniture
consisting of L-shape modules, “the Cloud” - new sofa
design by Tokujina Yoshioka, feminine designs by Studion
Front, Fergana designs recalling Uzbek motives, inedible but
pretty Sushi - Moroso Vegetal collection of universal chairs
with organic structures; “Mine and Yours” - new designs by
Frank Gehry and many others.
Internazionale del Mobile exhibitions are organized by
Cosmit company, leadership of which was recently passed
to Carlo Guglielmi. Mr. Guglielmi attributed considerable importance
to I Saloni as a highly efficient medium capable to
uniting manufacturers of interior decoration articles, designers,
architects and clients.
Public Interior
For Season
Design of modern public interior and the
atmosphere created in it by professionals
according to a thematic scenario result from
long-term, laborious creative efforts.
Public interior of For Season shop, created
by Design Bureau designers Nia
Mgaloblishvili, Ia Liparteliani and Sophie
Shevardnadze is an integral entity comprising
a harmonious variety of mobile elements.
The open space is perceived in its entirety,
though all of its components are equally
important and original. The unique quality
of their design, positioning, individuality
is achieved with the help of unnoticeable
touches. Each horizontal or vertical surface
of the interior is a bold statement, unordinary
decoration, design collage. Their compositional
structure, coloring, synchronization
with furniture and accessories evokes the
feeling of perfection.
The Conception
of Expressive
Architectural
Image
In February 2009 renovated office of “Independent
Cinema Service” and “Independent Cinema Project”
was launched in Tbilisi. The project of this office
was designed by “Cubic Studio”.
The project was developed by studio founders: artist and
architect Tamar Valishvili and designer Ketevan Samsonadze.
Project is supervised by Tamar Basilia.
Cubic Studio started to work on the project in May 2008.
First stage activities implied planning, then came the time of
interior and furniture design. When all the sketches and drawings
were ready, the working team of Cubic Studio got involved
into actual implementation of the project, including interior decoration
and production of furniture.
Lighting plays an important role in modern architecture.
Also in this project this component occupies considerable place.
It is commonly known that correctly planned lighting increases
productivity of the personnel, and Cubic Studio focused
its attention on this principle.
This successful project greatly increased the demand on
Cubic Studio’s services.
Interior of this office is a free-flowing space with distinct
individuality and precisely defined function. Simplicity, uninhibited
planning and dynamism – these are the key principles
which Cubic Studio used in its work. The conception of
expressive architectural image, forming the foreground of the
design, is strengthened by aesthetic associations and deep
connotations.
The interior consists of independent volumes bearing different
emotional “colouring” depending on their functional
specifics but efficiently merging into the general structure of
the space. The importance of aesthetically valuable, refined
forms is accentuated by the quality of their implementation.
Cubic Studio’s distinctive style and refined taste successfully
defined individuality of the interior and integrated it into the
surrounding life.
Interior of conceptual design clothes shop JNBY,
newly launched in Tbilisi, has been designed by architect
Sandro Katsitadze and his Chinese colleagues.
To create a positive environment, required for promotion
of high quality brands, the designers created a
modern interior space with clear-cut architectural graphics,
original choice of furniture and contrasting colors.
The style of the shop interior – industrial post-mod-
64
stili #32. 2009
ernism design – is as free and uninhibited as that of
the clothes it features. Unexpected design touches add
lightness and comfort to the public space. Stylistic integrity
of the interior does not subdue individuality and functionality
of constituent parts; on the contrary, their diversity
leaves the impression of weightlessness. All elements
of the space contribute to the general feeling of
freedom. A diverse palette of constructional and dec-
orative details is applied to visually increase the interior
and highlight originality of constantly changing clothes
collections exhibited on the shelves and racks.
The authors have succeeded in designing a highly
comfortable space, standing as a proof to their refined
taste and urban thinking.
The Oval
American Restaurant
6.Rkinis Rigi St. Tbilisi
Designed by Architects Levan Salukvadze. Gela
Iordanishvili.
Architectural Company "Gils"
One more restaurant is opened in Tbilisi with rich
interior.
The Oval-the shape of rugby ball- where the name
of the restaurant comes from. Favorite place for rugby
fans. There are ten huge TV-sets in here, where you
can watch rugby and other interesting information
about the games for 24 hours.
There are 2 halls, one big bar . There are wood
tables and chairs in the first hall. There is the special
equipment for preparing American steaks.
Soft armchairs in the second hall, dim light, photos
of leading figures of Rugby and Football-make the
ideal atmosphere for relaxing. The restaurant “The Oval”
is always at your disposal.
Oval’s Original compositions, articles and accessories
are distributed within the space in accordance with definite
rules, by large defining the general character of
the atmosphere. The interior is filled with an array of
interesting themes, and this is the key creative principle
underlying its design. Such an approach allows for
introduction of retro elements into the modern stylistics.
The public activity within the interior is focused on several
dominants, though in a non-localized manner. The
visitors, looking at this improvised exposition of decorative
articles, are sure to feel that the aesthetics of
modern public interiors should be based not only on
modern-style forms and objects, but also on the characteristic
touches and associations with the past, indispensable
for highlighting individuality of the space.
Party
Club
on the
Bambis
Rigi
Street
74
This article refers to Two Side Party Club on the
Bambis Rigi Street recently created by designer Natia
Kariauli. In this eclectic space, diversity of functionally
organized, highly refined and diverse design and
utmost efficiency of forms are merged into a credibly
integral space. Lighting, coloring, choice of accessories,
proportions, flexible graphics – unordinary composition,
formed by combination of these elements, is much more
meaningful than an artificial high-tech structure would
be in its place.
Quiet and respectable look of the interior, where there
are no distracting details, allocates a special function to
every detail. The space is perceived as an entity – not
just because of classical forms and refined color solution.
Carefully chosen finishing materials, textures and
warm tonalities of the furniture accentuate the imposing
character of the atmosphere. And the main point is that
the complex dialogue between newly-created and existing
elements in this interior has been quite successful.
Old
Metekhi
Not long ago bar-restaurant Old Metekhi was opened in old
Tbilisi, in a recently redecorated Old Metekhi Hotel.
Authors of this project are architects Levan Salukvadze and Gela
Iordanishvili (architectural company Gils).
While designing the interior of Old Metekhi bar-restaurant, the
authors skillfully adapted initial uncomfortable proportions of the space
to the new requirements. Impression of integrity in this interior is
achieved due to a holistic compositional and volumetric solution,
subtle zone-to-zone décor transitions and ingenious variation of colors.
All these expressive means successfully flavor the interior with
unique 19th century feel. Uncomplicated and elegant style of the
bar, fine views of old Tbilisi, spreading outside lavishly glazed windows,
carefully selected accessories and exclusive musical background
once again remind us the great tradition of Georgian hospitality,
lovingly preserved by our ancestors. Old Metekhi charms us
with the unique mixture of traditional and modern styles, which makes
characteristic atmosphere of the place still more attractive and comfortable.
In spite of stylistic integrity, any section of this interior retains
its individuality. Changeability of textures and colors helps focus attention
on particular dominant points, and varying intensity of artificial
lighting highlights the depth of colors and forms.
Old Metekhi lives up to its name – this bar really offers you a
rare opportunity to return to the past and share unique Georgian
traditions.
Panneau at
Krombacher

New sports complex built in Gudauri according to the project
by architect Dimitri Topuridze will soon be open to the public.
In this article we would like to focus on the interior of Krombacher
restaurant, functioning in the residential part of the complex. The
place is fully synchronized with the environment due to large glazed
windows. Architectonics of the space is refined and its perception
is intensified by varying degrees of combination between composition
and conventionality. You can feel the positive ecology of the
place at the very first step.
By adapting his professional intuition to the existing conditions
the author succeeded in creating a characteristic environment. The
impression of integrity in the interior is achieved due to a consistent
compositional solution, subtle variety of decorations with skillfully
placed highlights and colors changing from one surface to the
other, dialogues of lines and figures and design refrains. Key component
of the design is prevalent use of local natural materials
(wood, stone) in decoration.
In spite of stylistic integrity, every part of this interior retains
stili #32. 2009
individual features. Diversity of decoration colors and textures draws
attention and varying intensity of lighting highlights the depth of
form and color.
Professionalism is always manifested in attention to detail. In
this particular interior this can be felt everywhere – in the choice
of textures and accessories, in the little details highlighting the author’s
ideas, the confluence of which makes this space a harmonious
integrity – an interesting, vast decorative panneau.
Seaside
Twins
Seamless integration of an architectural object with its surroundings
is a key goal for any architect. In this particular
case, the role of a “starting point” in the project was allocated
to the seashore location of the site where the “Twins” were
supposed to be built. Architect Emma Omanadze skillfully adapted
her design to the existing conditions and maximally used
the proximity of seashore to her advantage.
Leading role in this Batumi-based project belongs to the
sea, and key principle of the design is unexpectedness. The
constituent parts of café-bar “Twins” have been positioned so
as to organically merge with their environment. Several identical
elongated volumes seem to float upon the waves like
luminescent boats. Interior spaces are spread out on three
levels with a ladder structure providing increasing level of access
to the seascape. Café facades facing the park compositionally
differ from the transparent “seaward” masses, adding a
further doze of dynamics and emotion to the design.
The complex is girdled with several originally planned open
terraces, each independently accessible from inside and outside
the café. The sea is so naturally merged with the buildings,
that it is hard to find a point from which it would not be
visible.
Architectural masses of the café are in absolute harmony
with their surroundings. Their reserved but elegant design
integrates them with the landscape, at the same time satisfying
all the functional demands relevant to a public place
located in city center.
The modern style of a residential interior is more than just comfortable. The
place is cozy in a special way, transforming into the reality according to its own
artistic laws.
The interior was designed by architect Kakha Dekanoidze. Its flexible planning,
refined and dynamic exterior forms and original interior, filled with beautiful furniture
and accessories, convey some unique charm.
Design details possess special expressivity, which increases the general originality
of design. The space feels integral in spite of being divided by visible or invisible
barriers; general color palette of the interior is accentuated by contrasting tones
of accessories. It is very easy to imagine how pleasant day-to-day life in this house
would be.
Living Space
for a Particular
Family
Author: Design Bureau.
Designers: Nia Mgaloblishvili, Ia liparteliani,
Sophio Shevardnadze
Realization stage of interior design often yields certain
deviations from the initial sketches. However in this particular
case the interior created by designers Nia Mgaloblishvili,
Ia liparteliani, Sophio Shevardnadze, is absolutely identical
to its render version, revealing the author’s professionalism
at its best.
The key highlight of this residential interior is efficient development
of design theme from zone to zone. The spaces
with their original architectonics integrate into an utterly comfortable
living environment. A visitor entering this apartment
perceives its positive, pacifying atmosphere from the very first
step and feels an urge to visit the place again and again.
Every detail in the interior is positioned so as to stand
out with most efficiency. Approach toward shapes, textures
and colours clearly expresses the designer’s artistic principles
and perfect taste. On the whole, the author’s interesting
and original solutions aim to achieve one and only goal
– to create a living environment, guaranteeing comfortable
and tasteful life.
Flawless Design
Organization of residential space, choice of colors and construction
materials, planning of lighting systems, matching of furniture to
interior style, selection of accessories – all of these issues should be
solved by a designer – an expert capable of offering original ideas
and implementing them on a professional level. Flawless design means
creation of a harmonious interior space integrated by a general stylistic
theme, with all the details carefully considered and the client’s
demands and “taboos” duly taken into account.
Interior design project developed by architect David Khurtsilava
for an apartment located in one of Axis high-rises is a perfect sample
of successful design with refined style and efficient functional planning.
Even at this early stage David Khurtsilava’s design shows all
the comfort and elegance with which the interior will be saturated
when it is realized.
House as
reflection of
spiritual world
Illustrated article titled “Alliance of Form and Color”,
published in the 26 th issue of Style Magazine narrated
about a residential interior designed by architect David
Khurtsilava.
The family, living in this extraordinarily tasteful environment,
decided to “flavor” it with its own fantasies
and invited the architect to assist them in this initiative.
Every family member contributed to the project,
first settling into the living space created for them
and then enriching and diversifying it with individual
details, seemingly unimportant but capable of affecting
the everyday life of their house. The architect
directed this process so as to maximally reflect the
character, activity and ideas of apartment dwellers in
the design of its interior. Every article in this living
space expresses the inner world of its inhabitants,
adding a surprising degree of comfort to the emotional
atmosphere of the house.
this key feature. The authors pay crucial attention to
the flexibility of volumes and features allowing to turn
the living environment emotional and natural. Within the
stylistic integrity, perfect understanding of interaction
between the inner spaces enables to fully exploit the
richness of compositional palette. The design of this residential
interior, together with its indispensably comfortable
and homely atmosphere, practically reflects the taste
and social standing of its dwellers.
Diversity
Spaces
Residential and public interiors realized
in different districts of Tbilisi according to Aleko
Korkotashvili’s projects offer a wide variety of
original and clearly individual designs. In
each particular case, volumetric compositions
feature unusual relationship between mass and
space, one of which acts as a source of shape
formation and the other - provides a milieu
in which the sculptural quality of the former
will stand out at its best. In creating emotionally
colored, human friendly environment the
architect attributes paramount importance to
diversity. Each fragment of modern or traditional
architectural décor present in Aleko
Korkotashvili’s interiors acquires considerable
meaning. Elegance is embodied in refined
nuances. Overall design solution represents
a combination of infinitely diverse décor
motives, volumetric or plastic solutions and
rhythms. Each fragment is saturated with the
spirituality of innovation, modernity, and the
special, comfortable atmosphere of the integral
spaces motivates us to be happy and
Glossy Black Ceramics
with Decorative Flavor
Modern Georgian ceramics takes its roots in ancient traditions, preservation, promotion
and future development of which should be the goal of any local artist.
In this article, we would like to tell you about the activities of Duruji Mineral Ltd.
(general director Mr. Alexi Rozomashvili) and Georgian Artist Ltd., represented by its
manager Ms. Manana Arabuli.
Key driving principle of Duruji Mineral is preservation and restoration of traditional
Georgian glossy black ceramics technique and development / promotion of modern
artistic and construction ceramics. In cooperation with Georgian Artist Ltd., Duruji
Mineral developed a project intended to support utilization of inert masses found in
the bed of Duruji river, which will foster solving of environmental issues and importantly
contribute to restoration of traditional glossy black ceramics technique. As a
result of laboratory studies this product was found to have unique features, enabling
production of construction materials (brick, tiles, blocks) as well as decorative articles,
accessories and ceramic tiles. This very material was used for finishing works
in a single-family house located in Saguramo village (project designed by architect
Nika Gogava).
116
stili #32. 2009
Manana Arabuli graduated from the ceramics department of design faculty of
Tbilisi State Academy of Art; she is regular participant of international exhibitions and
competitions and author of original works, stored at the Museum of Georgian Artists’
Union, Modern Art Center and private collections in Georgia, Brazil, Austria, Argentina,
Italy, Spain, Germany, UK and Holland.
Ceramics created by Manana Arabuli are original and beautiful. Synthesis of line,
color and form helps her endow her designs with the delicate breath of spirituality,
to share her innermost thoughts through art and make it live along with the unique
coloring, shape and decoration, distinguishing traditional Georgian ceramics from its
foreign counterparts.
Let us wish Duruji Mineral and Manana arabuli success in achieving their highly
important goals.
World Reflected in a Mirror
You would probably find it hard to name a more indispensable
and universal interior decoration element than
a mirror.
Indeed, it is impossible to imagine a house, apartment,
office, state institution, school, hospital or a kindergarten
without a mirror, which, alongside with its purely
utilitarian function, plays an important role in defining the
decorative image of the interior.
People buy mirrors in order to be able to see themselves
better or to enhance their living space with a stroke
of originality and comfort – though in both cases their
choice is motivated by a certain point of attraction, making
a particular mirror more appealing than others.
Mirrors created by artist Aka Goiashvili leave an indelible
impression with their diversity and ability to transform
the surrounding world.
Aka Goiashvili started her creative activities in 1994.
Until then, in 1985-1989 she studied at the department
of creative decoration of I. Nikoladze Art School and in
1989-1994 – continued her studies at the department of
monumental-decorative art of Tbilisi State Academy of Art.
Objects created by Aka are impressive and original.
Reflective surfaces of mirrors present colors and themes
in an unexpected manner. The themes themselves are
unexpected, turning reflections into dark myths or imaginary
shapes. Artist’s beautiful creative conceptions exceed
aesthetic limits and enter a new plane of complexity and
inner spirituality.
Works of art based on such approach add originality
to any space and serve as dominant points in creation
of harmonious and integral interiors.
Aka Goiashvili’s unique and refined mirror designs make
the surrounding world still more diverse and colorful.
Illusory Game of Form and Color
16-year-old Nini Chanturia is a student of Georgian-
French Saint-Exupery College. She has been infatuated
with art since childhood; at different times she engaged
in wool art and silk painting and took part in different
youth art exhibitions. It is already several years now that
Nini switched her attention on porcelain ornaments and
cloisonné enamel. She wishes to become an architect
and gets ready to enter the architectural faculty of the
Georgian Technical University.
Refined beauty of Nini Chanturia’s art shows her highly flexible
and polyphonic manner, diverse and dramatic creative palette.
Every look at the objects, created by the young artist reveals
new, unexpected details, engulfing the viewer into the poetic world
expressed with youthful sincerity. Nini’s ideas, feelings and creative
spirit merge in the incessant, stubborn search of beauty.
The artist’s boundless fantasy turns each of her cloisonné enamels
and colorful silk paintings original and unique. Flexibility, softness
and fluidity make the rhythm of changeable forms everlasting.
Ideas are realized in the illusory game of texture, color and
form. Illusion is art, and art is what Nini does by trying to achieve
perfection with her illusory games.
Cappadocia
This year I finally gratified my old dream and visited the
mystical land of Cappadocia.
The impressions from this trip were so huge, so overwhelming,
that it took me a considerable amount of time to analyze
what I saw there. Surely there is no point in squeezing historically
verified data about Cappadocia into a magazine article. On
the other hand, photos and scanty information I personally obtained
from various sources will give you a purely emotional description
of the Land of Noble Steeds (this is how “Cappadocia” translates
from ancient Hittite) or, if you prefer, the Land of Moon
Landscapes.
Meskheti always used to be a pillar of Christianity; this region
has made an important contribution to our religion on the whole
by giving birth to saints and holy fathers like St. George, St. Nino,
Basil the Great, his brother Grigol the Great and many others;
by maintaining traditions and offering hope of salvation and spiritual
strength to the whole Georgia and other Christian countries.
Shortly after Meskheti was integrated in the Georgian Tao-
Klarjeti Kingdom, Grigol Khandzteli lived and worked here.
Georgian Christianity flourished in this region; 14 dioceses established
in Meskheti belonged to the congregation of the Patriarch
of Georgia; many Meskh monks went to stay in Iveri and Petritsoni
Monasteries at the Holy Mount of Athos.
Reign of Christianity in Meskheti was ended by 16th-century
Ottoman invasion. Turk invaders kept disrupting local culture
and ecclesiastic life for three centuries (16th-18th CC). From 14
Meskhetian dioceses only one survived by 1764, when its bishop
Giorgi broke away from Georgian Church and joined the west-
ern Christianity in order to avoid severe persecution.
In 843 Cappadocia became the major center of sacral art.
Its dry and infertile hills proved ideal refuge for early Christians
persecuted by Arabs and other enemies for their religious beliefs.
In soft volcanic rocks Christians carved more than 40 villages
and towns. These rock settlements represented efficiently disguised,
well organized, secure and independent residential complexes,
capable of housing up to 30000 persons. Nowadays this
area is no longer populated, though central Turkey still retains
monuments of Cappadocia culture – churches and cave cities –

and all of these are accessible to tourists.
Hundreds of cave churches are scattered in Goreme
Canyon, the center of monastic life founded by St. Basil the Great
in the 4th century A.D. Mural paintings of these churches, rediscovered
in the 20th century, feature a surprising diversity of themes
and styles. Apparently, the majority of these churches are dated
back to 11th and 12th centuries. Overall, 105 temples were built
(or, rather, cut in rock) in this area before the 15th century, but
only 15 of them survived today.
Georgian Cappadocia – this is how we can call the area
where village Solomon-Kala, more commonly known as Solomonis,
is located. Ispir – a province in Choroki Gorge – historically and
geographically belonged to Georgia.
Solomonis is guarded by quaint golden rocks, piercing the
sky. The village and neighboring cave complex sit in a beautiful
valley at 15 km’s distance from Bana Cathedral.
Cave complex is rather hard to access, but when you ascend
these hills you are rewarded with breathtaking vistas.
The architectural complex is a smaller replica of Vardzia.
The church and the cells are carved deep in the rock. Founders
of the monastery, which was presumably built in the 15th century
with the support of Kvarkvare the 2nd, Great Atabeg of
Samtskhe, selected a truly perfect place for seclusion and spiritual
comfort.
Initially the church was all covered in mural paintings, but
unfortunately the frescos got smoked by fire lit indoors, and the
surviving sections of the painted walls were damaged by inscriptions.
In spite of the soot, bright-colored patches still can be seen
on the walls; if you look well, you can even read ancient Georgian
writing on them.
Architectural complexes like Solomonis cave monastery are
very rare. Who knows how many Georgians labored here to create
this surprising beauty? Time did not favor this place either,
though the founders of the monastery still achieved their goal by
creating a place that lasted through centuries.
The part of Cappadocia best studied by scientists and
researchers is the underground city of Derinkuyu. The settlement
was distributed on multiple levels and included schools, canteens,
churches, kitchens, apartments, wine cellars, water reservoirs, stalls,
dungeons, storerooms, etc. Air ventilation shafts are still functioning,
and tunnels and halls still have good lighting. In case of danger,
local population used to block the exits with huge boulders.
Floors between different levels of the city were pierced with small
holes enabling level-to-level communication. Nowadays the tourists
can access 8 levels of the complex, of which the lowest is located
54 meters deep underground. However, the scientists believe
that they have only researched about 15% of the city area and
that it had several more underground levels, which still retain
their mysteries for the future generations.
Looking at this land, squeezed between tall mountains, you
cannot help thinking that the world spread out in front of your
eyes is totally different from your everyday life – the past stands
out with special poignancy, the story of St. George resounds from
the wall paintings, the hills narrate how St. Nino started to praise
the Lord…
And you suddenly lose contact with reality.
The painter
speaking color
There are painters who “speak color” and express their
magic philosophy in color…
Expression, the mystery of red, calm rhythm and a flash
of a line – eternity!
Color noise – walls painted bright, pale silhouettes showing
through, beauty – wish to understand!
…And the portraits? A world apart…
Silence Is Consent – Laboratory Chapter IX
On May 20 2009 Georgian National Museum –
Tbilisi History Museum presented exhibition project
“Silence Is Consent – Laboratory Chapter IX” by artist
Kote Jincharadze.
Organizer: Georgian National Museum – Tbilisi
History Museum
Supervisor: Nino Zaalishvili
Project “Silence Is Consent – Laboratory Chapter
IX” started in 1996 as a series of actions-performances
aiming at establishing two-way communication
between humans and fishes. During these 13 years
author of the project – Kote Jincharadze – had been
organizing such actions at the banks and shores of
rivers, lakes and seas in different countries all over the
world. Human-to-fish contact was first established in
St. Petersburg, when an interactive being – Kote
Jincharadze – arranged action titled “Silence is Consent”
in cooperation with inter-passive beings – fish inhabiting
Fontanka River.
The principle of communication applied by the artist
is as follows: from a pre-selected point on the shore
texts of documents, specially prepared for fishes, are
lowered into water (the documents are enclosed in hermetically
closed glass cases with attached micro-

phones, recording the fish’s answers).
According to the theory of probability,
the fish read documents underwater
and their reaction is recorded
on magnetic tapes; later on these
tapes are analyzed and discussed
by the dominant party.
In the 13th year of project implementation
this activity evolved to a
new stage – Kote Jincharadze established
an international scientificresearch
laboratory where the materials
collected during the previous
years’ actions are researched.
Research activities in the lab are
maintained by chief scientific officer
of the institute, honorable member
of Chicago Royal Academy, master
of relationships with underworld
inhabitants Ms. N. Z. Dvali.
The exhibition presented in
Karvasla reflected the progress and
results of this important research.
Exhibition viewers could see
samples of various modern art techniques,
such as installation, photography,
video art, collage, mixed
media and painting.
Paris in
Vernissage
& TBILISI
Annette Revyakina was born in
Moscow. Having completed her public
school and art college studies in the capital
of Russia, Annette moved to Vilnius,
Lithuania, where she studied at the architectural
faculty of Lithuanian Art Academy
in 1989-1995. Since 1992 Annette maintains
architectural practice, creating
unordinary and memorable, highly professional
and tasteful designs. In the previous
issues of our magazine we told
you about several projects designed by
Annette Revyakina: hotel Europa-Royal
in Druskininkai, interiors of Lithuanian
State Arms Foundation shops in Vilnius
and Klaipeda, interior of an apartment
in Vilnius. Hope we will have more opportunities
to make you familiar with the
foreign architect’s works.
This time we would like to show
you glimpses of the world as seen by
Annette through a camera lens. This
world is heterogeneous, but frank and
open in expressing the photographer’s
feelings and viewpoints.
In the end of May 2009, Vernissage
Gallery (managed by art critic Zaira
Berelidze) launched a personal exhibition
of Annette Revyakina’s photos.
The exposition consisted of Paris landscapes
– views of Notre Dame de Paris
and vistas opening from this temple.
The photos hung on the walls narrated
a wide variety of different stories,
all of which revealed considerable analytical
skills and lyricism of the author.
Due to her deep perception of reality,
Annette has a very sound understanding
of spiritual dialectics of the universe.
Her creative style is reserved but poetic;
each of her works radiates some special
charm, reflecting the author’s taste
and creative thinking and evoking totally
different feelings. Aesthetic integrity,
melody and rhythm of purposefully positioned
photos, gives birth to unique aesthetics,
opening the gates of eternity
before the ephemeral. The same can
be said about the photos of Tbilisi, taken
by Annette Revyakina – each of them
shows how beautiful the city in which
we live is.
32nd Assembly-
Seminar of Architect
Skiers SKIA-2009
On February 24-28 2009 Bakuriani hosted 32nd Assembly-
Seminar of Architect Skiers. The assembly targeted current architectural
and urban development problems caused by world economic
crisis and attempted to involve the public, including governmental
officials and intelligentzia into discussion of such issues
and promote the social role of architects in their solving.
The seminar was dedicated to the memory of Alik Japaridze,
the first president of the Georgian Club of Architect Skiers: it was
largely due to this cheerful, ingenious and creative personality
that SKIA Club got established in 1977.
The traditional assembly of architects was followed by an
alpine skiing competition in giant slalom for different age groups,
which gathered 49 participants.
As always, the assembly of skier architects went on in an
uninhibited atmosphere of sports and creativity, good will and mutual
respect.
Art is more than infatuation
Very recently Hobby Gallery launched personal exhibition of Guliko Tsulukidze’s paintings.
Though Guliko is actually an architect, her paintings enjoyed equal admiration on the part of
her colleague architects and artists, who visited the exhibition.
Paintings and drawings, created by Guliko Tsulukidze, tell a story of rich inner world and
spiritual strength, of harmony with the surrounding world and individual principles helping to
analyze and understand it, of original technique and changeable but clear compositional structure.
Key features of Guliko Tsulukidze’s art are dynamics, rhythm, original architectonical logics
and unusual application of color. Art is more than infatuation for an architect – art serves
as a guide in the labyrinth of creative quest and we can only wish Guliko Tsulukidze success
in passing this labyrinth.
