Hi there. My name is <strong>Kaci</strong>.<br />
What’s your name?<br />

Nice to meet you.<br />
I am a regular kid like you but I have a special hearing<br />
device that I wear on each ear to help me hear.<br />
They are not normal hearing aids. They are called<br />
Cochlear Implants.<br />
Let me tell you about my hearing adventure.
I was born in Australia.<br />
Where were you born?<br />

When I was still a baby, the doctor told my parents that I<br />
was born with hearing loss.<br />
My parents were sad at first, but the doctor told them<br />
that there were options to help me hear.<br />
We went to an Audiologist, who is a doctor that helps<br />
others that have trouble hearing.<br />
Who is your Audiologist?<br />

My Audiologist said that either hearing aids or Cochlear<br />
Implants could help me, but he wanted me to try hearing<br />
aids first.
With the hearing aids, I could hear lots of new sounds!<br />
As I got older, I had more trouble understanding what my<br />
friends said and hearing where some sounds came from.<br />
What is the name of your best friend?<br />

I went back to the Audiologist and I was told that my<br />
hearing had changed.<br />
My parents and doctor all agreed that a Cochlear Implant<br />
would help me to hear again.<br />
After we talked to the surgeon, my parents agreed on a<br />
date for me to have the surgery.
My mom went with me to the hospital in the morning.<br />
What hospital did you go to for your surgery?<br />

My Surgeon met us at the hospital before the surgery.<br />
Do you remember your Surgeon’s name?<br />
_________________________________________<br />
After just a few hours, the surgery on both of my ears<br />
was done! I walked out of the hospital to get ice cream!<br />
What date did you have your Cochlear Implant surgery?<br />
_________________________________________
After a few weeks, I met my audiologist again so I could<br />
start hearing with my new devices.<br />
He plugged them into his computer and then handed<br />
them to me.<br />
I put them on and heard a lot of new sounds!<br />
I heard birds singing outside, a car’s horn, and I could<br />
even hear the clock ticking!<br />
My Cochlear implants were now activated.<br />
What was your activation date?<br />

I can now talk on the phone like everyone else.<br />
My favorite thing to do is to video chat with my<br />
Grandma.<br />
I can hear so well on the phone now that I have to tell<br />
Grandma to turn down the <strong>vol</strong>ume on her TV!<br />
Who are the family members or friends that you like to<br />
talk to?<br />

I love to go outside and play.<br />
Sometimes I go to the beach with my friends and swim.<br />
Before I couldn’t hear when I went swimming.<br />
Now I can put my sound processors in a swim suit and<br />
take them with me into the water.<br />
What is your favorite place to play outside?<br />

I celebrated my birthday on March 3rd. My parents,<br />
grandma, and best friend all showed up to surprise me.<br />
I could hear the Happy Birthday song clearly for the first<br />
time!<br />
Everyone helped me blow out my candles and we all ate<br />
birthday cake.<br />
When is your birthday?<br />

Now that I go to school, I can hear the teacher’s<br />
questions clearly and answer them too!<br />
My favorite parts about school are Geography and<br />
recess.<br />
What are your favorite parts about school?<br />

Thanks to my Cochlear Implants, I can do all of the things<br />
that all of my friends can do.
