Bio
“The jazz saxophonist is currently a hot commodity in Central Europe” writes Austrian Music Export about Saxophone player & composer Yvonne Moriel. She is currently based in Vienna and Zurich, and since about 2019 has been working as a freelance musician in and outside of Austria. In 2022 she founded her solo-project sweetlife where she fuses Jazz with Dub, Hiphop und Electronic. The band immediately managed to catch quite some attention. She is also part of Christian Muthspiel’s chamber-music-meets-avantgardistic-jazz-band Orjazztra and playing with internationally successful bands like Shake Stew or renowned Swiss Jazz Orchestra.
The enjoyment of combining and experimenting with different genres and the desire for creating her own music has had a strong impact on Yvonne Moriel’s career. Starting out with a focus on classical and contemporary music, her interest only later developed towards jazz through some random encounters with improvised music. The fascination for this completely different approach to music made her move to Vienna to study Jazz at MUK Wien. In 2019 she decided, despite owning a finished Degree in Medicine, to fully concentrate on a career in music. While playing concerts all over Europe and working with different artists and bands, she has put her focus increasingly on the creation of her own music.
Her EP sweet life, intended as project inbetween genres, came out end of 2021 and gave the artist quite some attention by international music blogs, magazines and labels. Additionally, it was the starting point for her live-project yvonnemoriel :: sweetlife, which she founded 1 year later. Concerts at locations like famous Brucknerhaus Linz, Jazzclub Porgy & Bess, Nordsternturm
Gelsenkirchen, Wiener Radiokulturhaus, at Kickjazz Festival and Jazzfestival Saalfelden – everything during the band’s first year – show the great potential of the artist and this still young project.
Moriel is part of a young generation of musicians who don’t let themselves be limited by genres. Besides jazz being her musical home she works and collabs with diverse artists, from Viennese rap-shooting star Bibiza to renowned Electro-Band Yukno. Additionally, in march 2023 the track zurich was released, which Moriel produced for Hiphop-Label Mellowax und Sony Denmark.
